
Tigers Send New Player for Playoffs; Llamas to West Michigan; McKinney on DL

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The Detroit Tigers announced Sunday night that outfielder Juan Llamas will be joining the Whitecaps from the Oneonta Tigers. Llamas will be taking Garth McKinney's roster spot; McKinney is going on the disabled list retroactive to August 31, 2004.
Llamas is currently hitting .303 in Oneonta with seven home runs and 55 RBI in 74 games. The Cartagena, Colombia native is among the New York-Penn League leaders in several categories including batting average (.303), hits (86), doubles (20), slugging percentage (.475), extra base hits (31) and RBI (55). Llamas was signed by the Tigers as a non-drafted free agent in November of 2003. He began his baseball career with the New York Yankees organization in 1998.
McKinney is currently batting .228 with 19 home runs and 41 RBI in 117 games. The Johnson City, Tennesee native broke the Whitecaps franchise record for home runs in a single season on August 17 when he hit his 17th long ball. McKinney has since hit two more home runs, but teammate Kelly Hunt currently holds the record with 20.
The Whitecaps return to Fifth Third Ballpark Wednesday, September 8 for the first game of the playoffs. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
