Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - Battle Creek raced out to an early lead and coasted to a 7-3 victory over the Dayton Dragons Sunday afternoon at C.O. Brown Stadium. A five-run first inning gave the Yankees a lead they would never relinquish.

Dayton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but it was short lived. Battle Creek scored five runs on four hits to build a 5-1 lead. Hector Made had an RBI single, Erold Andrus scored on a balk, Jason VanMeetren, Willie Vasquez and Tommy Rojas also had an RBI each for the Yankees.

The Yankees added a single run in the bottom of the second inning. John Urick drove in Nick Walsh with a single to put the Yankees on top 6-1. A single run in the fifth gave Battle Creek a 7-1 lead. Vasquez belted a solo home run to right-center - his eighth home run of the season.

Dayton scored two runs in the eighth on a home run by Luis Bolivar, but it was too little too late as the Yankees closed it out for the 7-3 win.

Yankees' starter Jason Jones (3-1) pitched six strong innings, allowing one run on six hits, while striking out five to get the win. Matt Brumit, Randy Vanderplow and Heath Castle all pitched one inning in relief.

The Yankees are now 38-31 for the second half and 71-67 for the season. The Yankees playoff hopes are still very much alive with one game to play. The series and regular season wraps up Monday afternoon at 2. Josh Smith will square off against Justin Mallett.
