Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA - Brandon Powell hit a pair of solo home runs in his first two at-bats, but it wasn't enough as the South Bend Silver Hawks (35-34, 77-62) recorded a 6-4 victory over the Burlington Bees (33-36, 55-84) at Community Field this afternoon. The Silver Hawks lead the series 3-0 and lead the season series 7-0.
Powell's first homer came with one out in the bottom of the first to get the Bees on the board with a 1-0 lead. Bees' starter Carlos Rosa (0-5) gave up the lead in the top of the third. With two outs and Tila Reynolds on second base, Josh Cook singled to center to drive in the tying run. After another single by Alex Frazier, Chris Carter doubled off the top of the wall in right to drive in two more and give the Silver Hawks a 3-1 lead. Powell's second homer came in the bottom of the third and it drew the Bees to within one at 3-2.
Rosa gave way to Alexis Encarnacion to start the fifth. Cook greeted the new pitcher with a single and scored on a double by Frazier to pus the Silver Hawks lead to 5-2. Bees' DH Cole Hilt answered with a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth to pull the Bees back to within two. It was Hilt's second homer of the year and the Bees tied their season high, hitting three homers in a game for the third time this year.
The Silver Hawks got in on the home run derby in the seventh when Allen Mottram went deep in his first at-bat after taking over at first base in the fifth. It was the 14th homer allowed by Encarnacion, the most on the Bees' staff. The Bees answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh when Josh Johnson batted with the bases loaded and one out and reached on a fielder's choice as Kila Kaaihue scored from third to make it 6-3.
Dusty Dossett held the Silver Hawks scoreless for the final two innings, giving the Bees one last chance in the bottom of the ninth. Ruben Vicente took over as the fourth Silver Hawks' pitcher of the game and gave up singles to Mike Gaffney and Hilt to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Vicente then struck out Jeff Barry and Johnson before giving way to lefty Doug Slaten who got Powell to ground out to third on a 3-2 pitch to end the game. Slaten picked up his fifth save. Silver Hawks' starter Jered Liebeck (5-2) worked six innings and struck out nine for the win.
