Kane County Cougars News Release
CLINTON, Iowa - The Cougars won't be returning to Ashford University Field again during the regular season, but they almost squeezed in an extra game with a lengthy extra-inning matchup in Clinton on Sunday. The Cougars (12-4, 57-29) fell to the LumberKings (5-11, 36-48) by a score of 2-1 in 14 innings.
Both teams featured solid pitching the entire series and showed arguably their bests on Sunday. Clinton held on to a 1-0 lead as Jose Flores faced just one over the minimum through five innings. The Cougars finally tied up the ball game with an RBI single from Shawon Dunston Jr. in the sixth inning. The game was tied 1-1 and remained that way for a long time.
Tyler Skulina started for the Cougars and allowed just one run on six hits through six innings. The Cougar right-hander didn't walk anybody and struck out three LumberKings.
Flores was pulled in the seventh with runners at the corners, but the Cougars weren't able to cash in.
Both bullpens were dominant after the starters' efforts as Jen-Ho Tseng worked five scoreless frames allowing just one hit, as he brought the game into extras. James Pugliese contributed by getting out of two innings with the potential winning run in scoring position.
Clinton finally found the scoreboard thirteen innings after their first run as Gerardo Concepcion (1-2) gave up two walks and a single to load the bases. Martin Peguero put the game away with a walk-off single for the 2-1 win in the bottom of the 14th inning.
Aaron Brooks (5-2) earned the win with two scoreless innings.
The Cougars will now enjoy an off day before continuing the road trip to Quad Cities. The series against the River Bandits will begin on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
Notables
- The Cougars allowed three runs total in the entire series against Clinton.
