Lugnuts roll lucky seven once again in topping Chiefs

July 22, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING- Jason Armstrong's three-run double highlighted a four-run fifth inning as the Lugnuts(50-47, 13-15) rallied from an early 2-0 defecit and won going away, 7-2 over the Peoria Chiefs(46-52, 11-17) in front of 8,306 fans at Oldsmobile Park on Friday night.

Armstrong's clutch hit came with one out in the fifth and came minutes after a perfect relay throw from Luke Hetherington, Ryan Klosterman and David Corrente cut down Eric Patterson at the plate to end the inning, keeping it a 2-0 defecit.

Patterson had given the Chiefs a 2-0 lead in the third when with two outs and two on, he ripped a double to right center to score Drew Larsen and Sam Fuld. The runs would be the only ones allowed by Lugnuts starter A.J. Wideman, who worked five innings and allowed six hits while striking out five to even his mark at 6-6.

Lansing got the four runs in the fifth when Klosterman led off the inning with a bunt single, went to second on a single by Aaron Mathews and to third when Corrente was hit by a pitch. Eugenio Velez then reached on an error by Peoria third baseman Aaron Smith, making it 2-1. Armstrong followed with his double to clear the bases and gave Lansing the lead for good.

The Lugnuts put the game out of reach by scoring three times off former Lugnut Walt Nolen. Eric Nielsen, David Hicks and Mathews collected the RBI's as Lansing was also helped out by a pair of errors by Peoria left fielder Bo Flowers.

Chris Shaver, the Peoria starter who allowed the four runs in the fifth took the loss to drop to 3-7. In six innings, he allowed three earned runs. Jordy Templet worked three scoreless innings of relief for Lansing and Daryl Harang worked a perfect ninth in his first action since June 3 to help preserve the win for Wideman and the Lugnuts.

Lansing plays for the series victory tomorrow evening at 7:05 p.m. as they host the third game of the series. Right hander Po-Hsuan Keng will make the start for Lansing. Fellow right hander Jesse Estrada will get the start for the Chiefs.
