Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -- The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays used solid pitching and timely hitting in a double-header sweep over the West Michigan Whitecaps by scores of 5-2 and 3-1 to propel themselves into first place at C.O. Brown Stadium Friday night.
Before a fireworks crowd of 2,911, the Devil Rays took a 3-0 early lead in Game 1 and battled back with runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth of Game 2 to earn the victories. Eddie De La Cruz was the star of the first game with five innings of one hit, one unearned run baseball. He walked three and struck out seven. Patrick Cottrell hit a homer and scored twice in the second game.
The victories put the Devil Rays (16-12) one game ahead of the Whitecaps (15-13) for the Eastern Division lead. It is the first time that Southwest Michigan has been in this position in the second half. The Rays are now 8-3 in their last 11 games. The double-header was caused by a post-ponement last night after a 33-minute rain delay. It was the fourth home game in a row for the Rays with a delay.
The Devil Rays will host the Whitecaps in a Cubs Tickets/Used Car Giveaway Night on July 23 at 7:05 p.m. LHP Jarrad Lavergne will start for the Rays against RHP Josh Rainwater for West Michigan.
