Peoria Chiefs News Release

Lansing, MI - The Peoria Chiefs couldn't keep up with the Lansing Lugnuts Friday night losing 7-2 at Oldsmobile Park. The Chiefs have dropped three in a row and slide to 11-17 on the half and 46-52 on the season.

For the second night in a row the Chiefs stuck first as they put together a two-out rally in the 3rd inning against Lugnuts starter AJ Wideman. Drew Larsen started the rally when he singled up the middle and then went to second on a basehit by Sam Fuld. Eric Patterson gave the Chiefs a 2-0 lead with a double into right-center, his 19th double of the season.

Chiefs starter Chris Shaver held the lead into the 5th inning allowing just one hit through the first four frames. Ryan Klosterman led off the 5th inning with a bunt single and advanced to second on a single by Aaron Mathews. Shaver then hit David Corrente with a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. Eugenio Velez hit a grounder to third that was bobbled by Aaron Smith allowing Klosterman to score Lansing;s first run of the game. Jason Armstrong cleared the bases with a double to left as Lansing took a 4-2 lead.

The Chiefs threatened in the 6th but left two runners on base before leaving another in the 8th. The momentum of the game shifted in the top of the 5th on a great defensive play by the Lugnuts. With Patterson at first and two outs, Ryan Harvey doubled to the wall in left. The throw to the cutoff man was high but Klosterman made a great adjustment and threw a strike to the plate to get Patterson to end the inning.

Lansing put the game away in the 8th thanks in part to more shaky defense from the Chiefs. Reliever Walt Nolen walked Luke Hetherington to start the inning and Hetherington stole second as Bernard's throw sailed into center. After a single by Eric Nielson brought home Hetherington, left-fielder Bo Flowers dropped a fly ball for the second game in a row. A groundout gave the Lugnuts a 6-2 lead before Mathews singled to left. Flowers threw wild to the plate for his second error of the inning allowing another run to score as Lansing took a 7-2 lead.

Shaver (3-7) takes the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, over six innings. The left-hander allowed just four hits and walked one while striking out five. Wideman (6-6) looked much sharper than his June 6th outing against the Chiefs when he lost 7-5. The left-hander allowed just two runs on six hits while striking out six over five innings.
