LANSING - Luis Perez threw seven innings of terrific baseball for the Lansing Lugnuts in their 4-0 triumph over the Fort Wayne Wizards in the second-half opener before 7,423 fans at Oldsmobile Park Thursday night. The win was the Lugnuts seventh shutout of the season, tying them for second in the league in that category.

Perez (3-5) was magnificent as he gave up just four hits over seven innings of work. He also struck out a season-high nine batters in the outing. Perez only allowed four runners to reach scoring position during his start, as he delivered his fifth quality start in his last six outings.

Lansing gave Perez all of the run support that he would need in the fifth and sixth innings.

The Lugnuts plated the first run of the game in the fifth when Yohermyn Chavez singled into center field, scoring Kevin Ahrens to put Lansing ahead 1-0. Manny Rodriguez later scampered home on an Eric Eiland sacrifice fly to double the lead at 2-0.

Lansing added two more runs in the sixth when John Tolisano doubled and scored on a Matt Liuzza triple that pushed the lead to 3-0. Ahrens followed that two batters later with a sacrifice fly that brought Liuzza home to make it 4-0.

Liuzza finished the game 3-for-4, falling just a homer shy of the cycle.

Lansing (40-31, 1-0) and Fort Wayne (37-34, 0-1) will continue the series Friday night at Oldsmobile Park. Southpaw Marc Rzepczynski (2-2, 2.50) is scheduled to make the start for the Lugnuts. He will be opposed by the Wizards' Wynn Pelzer (4-3, 4.04).

Friday will feature an Auto-Owners Insurance figurine giveaway, as bronzed Ryan Theriot figurines will be given to the first 2,500 fans through the gates. LAFCU Fireworks will follow the game. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
