
Kernels stumble in second half start, 5-2, to Quad Cities

June 19, 2008 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels were unable to improve on their four game winning streak to end the first half of the MWL season as they fell to the Quad Cities River Bandits, 5-2, in front of 2,343 fans on Thursday night at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Kernels starter Trevor Bell allowed a run on seven hits and struck out six over seven innings in a no-decision effort. The Kernels scored single runs in the first and third innings as Efren Navarro doubled home Hector Estrella and then scored Clay Fuller on a sacrifice fly. Fuller finished the night 2 for 4 with a stolen base and Andrew Romine was 1 for 4 with a stolen base, his 27th of the season.
Quad Cities scored four runs in the top of the eighth off Kernels reliever Chris Armstrong (0-2) with a walk and four straight hits including a double and triple. Francisco Rivera was 3 for 4 with two doubles and Tommy Pham was 3 for 4 with a triple and 2 RBI.
Reliever Blake King (2-5) pitched two scoreless innings and struck out four for the win and Pete Parise struck out two in the ninth for his fifth save.
The Kernels and River Bandits play game two of this four game set on Friday night at 7 pm as its Pat McGrath Chevyland Used Car Night. All fans, 18 and older, will receive a ticket when they enter the stadium and if your number is drawn, you've won a used car from Pat McGrath Chevyland. Gates open at 6 pm with first pitch set for 7 o'clock.
