Luciano Acosta Named MLS Player of the Month for May
May 31, 2024 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
FC Cincinnati News Release
FC Cincinnati midfielder Luciano Acosta has been voted the Major League Soccer Player of the Month for May 2024, the league announced today. The monthly award, voted upon by a panel of select national media members, is Acosta's fifth of his career, and his fourth with FC Cincinnati (June 2022, July 2023, August 2023).
The Argentine playmaker has been stellar in 2024, and in May the FC Cincinnati captain has led the Orange and Blue to a club-record winning streak, which ended at seven on Wednesday night. Cincinnati were the only team in MLS to win five games in the month and held that seven-game winning streak from April 20 to May 25, tying for the second-longest single-season streak in league history. FCC won five of the club's six matches in May, including all three road matches.
In May, Acosta became the first player in club history to record a goal contribution in nine consecutive matches and the eighth player in MLS history to reach at least 10 assists in four straight seasons. On Matchday 15, Acosta scored in the first half against St. Louis CITY SC, which marked his 150th career goal contribution, joining Kei Kamara as the only active players to accomplish the feat.
Acosta contributed the game-winning goal or assist on all of FC Cincinnati's wins in May, as the 2023 Landon Donovan MLS Most Valuable Player continues to make his case to hold onto the award in 2024. This is the fifth time in his career that Acosta has taken home Player of the Month, and he trails only Josef Martínez, Landon Donovan, and Carlos Ruiz, all with six honors apiece, for the most in MLS history.
FC Cincinnati have taken home five of the most recent 15 Player of the Month awards since June 2022 (Acosta, June 2022, July 2023, August 2023, May 2024; Brenner, September/October 2022).
The midfielder, who turned 30 today, has been spectacular as ever in 2024 with seven goals and 10 assists. He leads MLS this season in game-winning goals with five and game-winning goal contributions (goal or assist) with nine. Across MLS, 27 teams currently have fewer than eight wins in 2024.
Acosta leads MLS since the start of 2023 with 14 games of two-plus goals or assists and 11 games of at least one goal and one assist, and he leads MLS since the start of 2023 with 48 goal contributions.
