Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - The LumberKings couldn't muster much offense against Burlington starter Pat Lowery in a 5-3 loss on Wednesday night at Ashford University Field.
Making his third start of the year for the Bees, Lowery limited Clinton to just one run on two hits over seven innings. Jordy Lara singled to lead off the second inning and later scored on a fielder's choice from Janelfry Zorrilla.
The run came after Burlington got to Clinton starter Matt Anderson in the top of the second. Back-to-back doubles by Sandy Martinez and Pedro Toribio plated three for the Bees.
Shortstop Chance Ross, playing in his first game with Burlington, added laser beam homer in the fourth inning to put the Bees on top, 4-1. Meanwhile, Lowery was dialed in as he retired the final seven batters he faced.
The lead was extended to 5-1 on Chevy Clarke's RBI double in the top of the ninth inning. In the bottom of the ninth, Tyler Marlette reached on left-fielder Brennan Gowens' error with one away. After Gaby Guerrero popped up for the second out, Taylor Ard smashed his second homer of the year to trim the lead to 5-3. Any comeback attempt to be was squashed by Garrett Baker who retired Zorrilla on a pop up to end the game.
The two teams play game two of the three-game series Thursday night. The LumberKings send left-hander Scott DeCecco (3-4, 3.14) to the mound against Burlington right-hander Jake Boyd (2-3, 3.23). Fans will receive the Clinton National Bank & KCLN / MAC 94.7 Mini-Notepad Giveaway. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM CT.
