GREENSBORO, N.C. (July 16, 2012) -- Greensboro starting pitcher Charlie Lowell struck out a career-high 14 batters and took a no- hitter two outs into the seventh inning en route to a Grasshoppers 8-3 win at NewBridge Bank Park on Monday night.
Lowell (4-4) struck out the first two batters in the seventh inning before Chris Curley broke up the no-hit bid with a solo home run (3), his first of two. Lowell finished the game allowing one run on one hit in seven innings with no walks.
Lowell had already surpassed his career-high in strike outs when he fanned nine of the first 12 batters he faced. He was perfect through five innings before Joe De Pinto led off the sixth by reaching base on a shortstop Austin Nola fielding error. De Pinto was rolled into an inning-ending double play, allowing Lowell to face the minimum through six.
Curley added another two-out home run (4) in the ninth inning, finishing the game 2-for-4 with the pair of long balls. All four of his home runs this season have come against the Grasshoppers.
Chris Devenski (5-5) took the loss, giving up five runs on 11 hits with one strikeout in 5 and 1/3 innings of work.
Greensboro scored three runs in the first inning on four hits and a pair of outfield errors. James Wooster added an RBI-double in the first. Wooster led off the fourth inning with a home run (8) to make it 4-0 Greensboro.
After a 52 minute rain delay during the middle of the seventh inning, Greensboro added three runs (one earned) against Stew Brase, who worked the final two innings for Kannapolis.
The Intimidators and Grasshoppers wrap up this four-game series on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. at NewBridge Bank Park as Kannapolis sends RHP Myles Jaye (3-6, 5.37) to the mound against Greensboro's RHP Jose Urena (5-4, 2.96). The Intimidators return to CMC-NorthEast Stadium for a four-game series against Charleston on Thursday, July 19.
