Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- The Louisville offense exploded for multiple runs in the first, fourth, fifth and seventh innings en route to 16 scores in the contest with right fielder Danny Dorn, first baseman Todd Frazier and left fielder Michael Griffin combining to go 10-for-14 with seven runs scored and 12 RBI as the Bats slugged their way to a 16-6 victory over the Indianapolis Indians in front of 11,241 on Friday night at Victory Field.
With the loss, Indianapolis falls to 69-72 on the season, while the victory improves Louisville's record to 78-62 on the year. The loss also drops the Tribe's record against the Bats to 8-11 on the season with three games remaining between the two teams this year.
Louisville wasted little time offensively as the Bats plated six quick runs in the top of the first inning. With the bases loaded and no one out in the frame, Frazier stepped to the plate and lined his fourth triple of the season out to deep center field to clear the bases and give Louisville a three-run advantage.
Following a walk and a ground ball out, Frazier came plateward on a run-scoring ground out by second baseman Eric Eymann, before Griffin launched a two-out, two-run longball out right field to cap the scoring in the frame. The home run was Griffin's sixth of the season and the outfielder's first of the year against the division rival Indians.
Indianapolis then cut Louisville's lead in half with three, two-out scores in their half of the first inning. After the first two Tribe batters struck out to open the contest, 1B Mitch Jones got the Indians' offense on the board with an RBI single to center field, before C Jason Jaramillo's two-out, two-run double capped the scoring and pulled Indianapolis to within three runs of the Bats at 6-3.
The Bats responded with four more scores in the top of the fourth inning to take a commanding 10-3 advantage. With two outs in the inning, CF Dave Sappelt's seventh double of the season plated the first run of the frame, before two more two-baggers - one by both Dorn and Frazier - accounted for three more tallies and a seven-run cushion.
Louisville upped its advantage to 12-3 in the top of fifth on Griffin's second two-run home run of the contest, before Tribe RF Brandon Moss launched his 22nd home run of the season out to deep right center field to trim the Bats' lead to 12-6. Moss' majestic, three-run blast drove home his 91st, 92nd and 93rd RBI of the season to pull the Indians' outfielder to within two RBI of tying former Durham Bulls and current Tampa Bay Rays' INF Dan Johnson's International League-leading 95 RBI.
Louisville closed out the contest's scoring with three runs in the seventh inning and one more in the ninth to take an insurmountable 16-6 lead. Pinch-hitter Sean Henry, SS Zack Cozart and Dorn - who now has eight RBI in two games against the Tribe this series - each chipped in with run-scoring singles in the seventh, before Dorn's second double of the evening capped Louisville's 16-run outburst in the game's final frame.
Indians' starter Mike Crotta (1.0 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO) was strapped with his 10th loss of the year - a mark that ties his single-season, career-high in defeats - after he allowed six runs on four hits in a season-low one inning of work. Tribe relievers Corey Hamman (3.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO) and Anthony Claggett (2.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO) didn't fare much better than Crotta, as they allowed a combined nine earned runs on on 10 hits in 5.2 innings of work. Outfielder Jonathan Van Every (1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 SO) came in to pitch the top of the ninth inning and allowed one run on two hits in one inning of work.
In his first Triple-A start of the 2010 campaign, Bats' LHP Tom Cochran (4.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO) did not figure in the game's final decision after allowing three runs on eight hits in four innings of work. Louisville reliever Philippe-Alexandre Valiquette (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) earned his second victory of the season after holding the Tribe scoreless over two innings of work.
In a game that featured 22 total runs and 30 combined hits, two Tribe batters - Moss (2-for-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 BB) and Jaramillo (1-for-5, 1 2B, 2 RBI) each drove in multiple runs, while three Bats hitters - Dorn (3-for-5, 2 R, 2 2B, 4 RBI, 1 BB), Frazier (3-for-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 4 RBI) and Griffin (4-for-5, 4 R, 1 3B, 1 HR, 4 RBI) - collected at least three hits and each drove in four RBI on the evening.
Indianapolis concludes its 2010 home schedule against the division rival Louisville Bats on Saturday, September 4 at 6:00 p.m. RHP Jeremy Powell is expected to get the start for the Tribe, while RHP Matt Klinker is the probable starter for the Bats.
The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and broadcast live on Comcast and Bright House Networks digital channel 81 with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show on WXLW-950 AM begins at 5:40 p.m.
