Lopez Named Pitcher of the Week
July 6, 2015 - Frontier League (FL)
Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. (July 6, 2015) - The Southern Illinois Miners announce that right-handed starter Adam Lopez has been named the Frontier League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending July 5th, as chosen by Pointstreak, the official statistical provider of the Frontier League and the Independent Professional Baseball Federation. He is the second Miner to receive the honor this season after Matt Bywater, who won the weekly award following his nine-inning no-hitter on June 12th against the Evansville Otters at Rent One Park.
Lopez had a highly successful week for Southern Illinois, going 2-0 in two starts while allowing just three runs over 13 innings of work on 11 total hits, walking four and striking out 10. He pitched seven innings of two-run ball on Tuesday, June 30th in a 5-4 Miners win at Gateway, part of a road sweep of the Grizzlies, and also tossed seven innings of one-run ball on Sunday against the Normal CornBelters in a 2-1 Miners victory to salvage the finale of the series and pull the team within two games of first place in the East Division.
The Fredericksburg, Virginia native, who was also voted to the Frontier League All-Star Game on Monday as one of six Miners selected to participate in the game, is unbeaten in eight starts with a 6-0 record, tying him for first in the league in wins with Bywater among others. His 1.52 ERA ranks second in the league among qualifying pitchers, and opposing batters' .198 average against him also ranks in the top five in the league through July 5th. He has struck out 50 batters in 53 1/3 innings while allowing only 38 hits and walking only 14.
The Miners open up a six-game road trip to close out the first half against the Traverse City Beach Bums on Tuesday night, July 7th at 6:05 p.m. CT.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2014 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
