Lancaster Stormers News Release
There are those players a team has a difficult time getting through in a big situation.
For the Lancaster Barnstormers, Bridgeport third baseman Luis Lopez is one of those guys.
Lopez ripped a three-run double inside the third base bag in the bottom of the third, leading the Bluefish to a 5-3 victory over the Barnstormers at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard Friday evening.
The loss, Lancaster's first in five games against Bridgeport this season, cut the Barnstormers division lead to 4 1/2 games over York, which won, 1-0, at Somerset.
With the Barnstormers leading, 2-1, Kennard Jones opened the bottom of the third with a ground rul double into the right field corner. Eddie Rogers moved him to third with a bunt. Right-hander Alan Johnson (3-4) walked both Prentice Redman and Brock Peterson to fill the bags, and Lopez quickly emptied them with his smash down the left field line.
An almost identical double by Lopez in the fifth inning off Mike Johnston was followed by Luis Rodriguez two-bagger into the left center field gap for a 5-2 lead.
Lefty Dan Serafini (1-0) cut the Lancaster offense short on Friday evening after the Barnstormers got off to a quick start. Adam Godwin doubled to start the night. Fehlandt Lentini followed with an infield single that deflected off Serafini back toward Rodriguez, the catcher. Rodriguez attempted a late throw that eluded Peterson and rolled into shallow right field as Godwin scored.
Lancaster went to work again in the second inning after a Redman single to left tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first. Blake Gailen and Ryan Harvey got the inning started with singles and advanced on a wild pitch. Jaime Pedroza walked to load the bases. Kody Kirkland, in his first at bat since May 24, barely missed the right field line with a slicing liner, then got one run home on a sacrifice fly to right.
The Barnstormers did nothing more until the final three innings when the club banged out five hits, including three doubles, off the Bridgeport pen. They could only muster one run, produced on a Pedroza double to right and a Kirkland single to right center in the ninth, falling two short as Jorge Julio recorded his sixth save of the season.
Lancaster and Bridgeport meet again on Saturday evening at 6:05. The Barnstormers will send Mark Brackman (2-2) to the mound against left-hander Paul Oseguera (3-2). Fans may tune in to 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app beginning at 5:45.
