
Loons Win Pitchers' Duel

DAYTON, OH - The Great Lakes Loons vastly improved their playoff positioning Tuesday night with a 2-1 pitchers' duel victory over the Dayton Dragons.
With the win, the Loons pull to within an half-game of the Dragons for the final playoff position in the Midwest League Eastern Division playoff race.
John Richy started for the Loons and allowed the Dragons' lone run, an unearned score to tie the game in the third. He went a career-best 4 2/3 innings with three hits, three walks and four strikeouts.
Mark Pope (4-3) entered with two on and two outs in the fifth inning, worked out of that jam and followed with a scoreless sixth inning to notch his fourth win of the year.
Newcomer A.J. Vanegas made his second appearance with the Loons and held Dayton scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings, facing the minimum six batters with three strikeouts.
The ninth inning belonged to fireballer Jacob Rhame, who extended his franchise-record scoreless innings streak to 31 with scoreless ninth inning, notching his eighth save of the year.
The Loons scored first with in the second inning with a two-out single by Alex Santana, a walk by Tyler Wampler and an RBI single by Jose Capellan.
After Dayton tied the score in the third, capitalizing on a throwing error by Capellan, the Loons manufactured the go-ahead run in the sixth. Devan Ahart led off the inning with a double, Faustino Oguisten bunted him to third and Paul Hoenecke drove him in with a sacrifice fly to center.
Ahart had two of the Loons' four hits in the game.
The Loons return to Dow Diamond Wednesday night for the final three home games of 2014 with playoff positioning on the line. Right-hander Scott Barlow (6-6, 4.41 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Loons against Lake County righty Mitch Brown (7-8, 3.39).
