LANSING, Mich. - The Lake County Captains (35-28, 62-71) quieted a late rally to defeat the Lansing Lugnuts (27-37, 59-74), 3-2, and take the rubber match of a three-game series on Tuesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

With the loss, Lansing's elimination number for missing the postseason dropped to three.

Lake County jumped on Lansing starter Jeremy Gabryszwski (Loss, 6-6) in the second inning with back-to-back RBI singles by Grant Fink and Claudio Bautista to take a 2-0 lead.

The Lugnuts had a chance to answer in the bottom half of the inning, but D.J. Davis was tagged out trying to advance home on a ground ball to third baseman Paul Hendrix.

Two batters later, Justin Atkinson was tagged out at the plate trying to score on a fly out to right fielder Mike Papi.

Lake County starting pitcher Luis Lugo (Win, 9-9) allowed five hits in five scoreless innings.

Trailing 3-0 heading into the eighth, Lansing first baseman Rowdy Tellez singled in a run and Dawel Lugo plated a run on a groundout to close the deficit to one.

Caps reliever Robbie Aviles (Save, 1) worked a perfect ninth inning to close out the series clincher for the Captains.

In defeat, center fielder Chaz Frank had two hits and scored a run while making a pair of highlight diving catches defensively.

The Lugnuts hit the road for their final road series of the season on Wednesday, beginning a three-game set against the Dayton Dragons at Fifth Third Field. Right-hander Starlyn Suriel (2-3, 2.84) will make his seventh start for the Lugnuts, with Cincinnati first-round pick Nick Howard (1-1, 4.56) on the mound for the Dragons.
