Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

DAVENPORT, IOWA - The Kernels won 6-1 at Quad Cities on Tuesday night, salvaging one in the series and avoiding the three-game sweep. The Kernels pounded out 14 hits on the night and scored three runs right away in the first inning. Four Kernels pitchers combined to strike out 14 on the evening. The victory snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Kernels in games played at Modern Woodmen Park.

The playoff-bound Kernels return home on Wednesday night to open up a three-game series against the Kane County Cougars. There are six games remaining the regular season before the Kernels open up the Midwest League playoffs on September 3 in Cedar Rapids. They need one more win or one more Wisconsin loss to secure the second half's top seed.

The Kernels took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning as the first three batters all scored before an out was recorded. With Ryan Walker and Engelb Vielma on base after starting the inning with consecutive singles, Walker came home on a throwing error by River Bandits starting pitcher Michael Feliz. The error put Vielma and Chad Christensen in scoring position, and they both scored on Mitch Garver's two-run single into center field. Garver's single gave him his team-best 75th and 76th runs batted in on the season.

Cedar Rapids added two more runs with back to back run-scoring hits in the third inning, increasing their lead to 5-0. The Kernels recorded four total hits in the inning, raising their total to eight hits through three innings. Alex Swim's RBI single to center plated Christensen. J.D. Williams followed by pulling a sharp RBI single into right, scoring Garver to give the Kernels an early five-run cushion.

Quad Cities picked up their first run and hit in the bottom of the third inning, making the score 5-1. Bobby Boyd walked to begin the inning and advanced to second base on Jose Fernandez's single into left. With Chase McDonald at the plate, Boyd stole home as Fernandez was caught stealing at second base. The run was unearned because of an earlier error by Kernels third baseman Logan Wade, who dropped a pop up in foul territory.

The Kernels added a run in the fifth inning to push their lead to 6-1. Swim singled with two outs and scored on a RBI triple to the right-center field wall by Williams. It was the fourth triple on the season for Williams, all coming since August 14.

Chris Mazza (4-3) picked up the win in relief for the Kernels. He worked around four hits, allowing no runs over two innings. He struck out one and walked one.

Lewis Thorpe started for the Kernels and went four innings. He struck out eight and walked four, allowing just one unearned run on a single hit for the no-decision. Brian Gilbert tossed two scoreless innings in relief, allowing two hits while striking out three. Dallas Gallant struck out two in a perfect ninth inning to finish off the win.

Feliz (8-5) took the loss for the River Bandits on the hill. He allowed six runs (four earned) on 10 hits over five innings, striking out four and walking two. Jandel Gustave worked a scoreless inning for Quad Cities, allowing one hit while striking out one. Albert Minnis worked a perfect inning, striking out one in relief. Raul Rivera pitched two innings for the River Bandits, allowing no runs on three hits while striking out three.

The Kernels return home on Wednesday to host Kane County, the Midwest League affiliate of the Cubs, at 6:35 p.m. It's a Free Money Wednesday, sponsored by First Federal Credit Union. $500 will be given away the main gates.

RHP Ryan Eades (9-11, 5.48) is scheduled to start for the Kernels while Kane County will counter with RHP Jen-Ho Tseng (6-1, 2.45). Tickets are available at www.kernels.com.
