Loons walk off Lugnuts in first half finale

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (32-37) fell to the Great Lakes Loons (34-36), 2-1, on an Alex Santana walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning, closing out the Midwest League's first half on Sunday at Dow Diamond.

The Loons took the rubber match of the three-game series, holding the Lugnuts to just three hits for the afternoon.

Santana's ninth-inning single off of Lansing reliever Scott Silverstein (Loss, 6-3) came with two outs and two strikes, scoring pinch-runner Jesmuel Valentin for the walk-off win.

Great Lakes reliever Victor Araujo (Win, 3-0) pitched perfect eighth and ninth innings with two strikeouts.

Lansing right fielder Chaz Frank went 2-for-4 with a double and stole three bases while scoring the Lugnuts' only run of the game on Matt Dean's sacrifice fly.

Catcher Jorge Saez had the only other hit for Lansing, extending his on-base streak to a team-high 23 games.

Right-hander Jeremy Gabryszwski allowed one run on four hits with a walk and a strikeout in his five-inning start.

Lansing reliever Roberto Espinosa pitched 2.2 innings, allowing just one hit, to extend his scoreless streak to 10.2 innings.

The Lugnuts begin the three-day All-Star break on Monday and return to Cooley Law School Stadium on Thursday to begin a four-game home series with the Bowling Green Hot Rods.
