Kane County Cougars News Release

BELOIT, Wis. - The Cougars search for a win in Beloit continues as even a nine-run lead could not turn into a victory over the Snappers on Saturday night. The Cougars (45-24) fell to the Beloit Snappers (29-40) 12-11 in one of the wildest games of the season.

The Cougars are 0-5 at Pohlmann field this season and have a 3-6 record against the last place Snappers this year.

For the second straight game the Cougars pounced quickly on the Snappers with a run in the first inning. That advantage grew to 3-0 through the first four frames. Jordan Hankins started off a good night with two of the run-scoring plays.

Jen-Ho Tseng didn't need much support as he silenced the Beloit offense for five innings. In his second start since coming off the disabled list, Tseng allowed just one hit, two walks and struck out a season high eight batters.

After five innings, the offense poured on in the top of the sixth for a substantial lead for Tseng. Tyler Holstegge took the mound for the Snappers to begin the sixth and allowed the first five hitters to reach. A 5-0 forced a pitching change and Bobby Wahl served up two-run single to Hankins, an RBI double to Yasiel Balaguert and a sacrifice fly to Cael Brockmeyer. In the middle of the sixth it was 9-0 Cougars.

Then Beloit got their turn.

With the Snappers first look at a new pitcher, Alberto Diaz loaded the bases before BA Vollmuth's two-run single. Vollmuth's base hit was just the second hit for Beloit all game. Diaz continued to struggle as he reloaded the bases with a walk to Chih-Fang Pon. Luis Baez instantly brought the Snappers back into the ballgame when he unloaded on a 0-1 pitch for a grand slam over the left field wall. A double by Ryan Mathews made it seven straight batters to reach base and a call to the bullpen. Beloit squeezed out one more run in the inning when Phil Pohl grounded out against Corbin Hoffner, but drove home Mathews to cut the Cougars lead down 9-7.

Two innings later the Cougars went back on top by three when Hankins delivered again, this time a run scoring double.

Wasting no time to retaliate, the Snappers loaded the bases with two outs. Hoffner got a ground ball from Melvin Mercedes that turned into a double play, but scored another run for Beloit making it 10-8 Cougars. After a walk to Jaycob Brugman Tyler Bremer took the mound and gave up a two-run double to Vollmuth for a 10-10 tie. The Snappers weren't done as Vollmuth moved to third on a wild pitch and Pon drew a walk. With runners at first and second, Pon get himself in a rundown and Vollmuth took off from third. A throw home looked good, but Vollmuth slid underneath the tag handing Beloit their first lead of the day 11-10.

Trey Martin kept the Cougars' heartbeat alive with a one-out single in the ninth. Hannemann singled to right field allowing Martin to reach third, but on the throw Hannemann took off for second and was thrown out. Carlos Penalver heroically doubled down the left field line to score Martin and tie the game again 11-11.

The stars were aligned for Beloit in the ninth as Phil Pohl connected on a two-out walk-off solo home run to defeat the Cougars 12-11.

Andres Avila (2-3) earned the win pitching the final inning despite blowing the save. Tyler Bremer (5-1) suffered a blown save and the loss.

The first half of the 2014 campaign will conclude on Sunday as the Cougars finish off the series in Beloit. Tyler Skulina (4-3, 2.70) will throw for the Cougars against the Snappers' Junior Mendez (2-2, 4.95). First pitch from Pohlman Field if scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The game can be heard on AM 1280 WBIG and kccougars.com.
