Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - After four hours and 12 innings, the Great Lakes Loons (56-62) lost 4-3 to the visiting Lansing Lugnuts (73-42) Saturday night at Dow Diamond in front of 5,427 fans in attendance for Star Wars Night.
In the top of the 12th, tied 3-3, the Lugnuts broke the deadlock with a two-out RBI-single from Kevin Patterson. The run came off Loons reliever Danny Coloumbe, who struck out two Lugnuts for the first two outs of the frame. Coulombe also delivered two big-time strikeouts in the 11th inning with the bases loaded. With five total strikeouts, the Arizona-native was charged with the loss, his first.
The Loons were trailing by a run earlier in the game, but charged to their only lead in the fifth inning when Loons catcher Michael Pericht lifted a towering home run to left field, estimated at 385 feet.
"I didn't think I got all of it because it was off the end of the bat, but I got enough to get out," Pericht said after the game. "It feels good to get a big hit in a close game like that."
The blast plated two runs for the Loons, scoring Jesse Bosnik, who singled to lead off. The 3-2 lead held until the seventh when Lugnuts outfielder Nick Baligod took Matt Shelton deep to right field for his first home run, which would force the game to extras.
The Lugnuts struck first with a pair of two-out hits in the first inning. Cleanup batter K.C. Hobson doubled to right field and scored Chris Hawkins for the 1-0 lead. The Loons leveled the game in the bottom of the inning by moving around Darnell Sweeney, who singled to lead-off, with a Jesus Arredondo sac-bunt, stolen base and passed ball. K.C. Hobson slapped a single past third baseman Bosnik to score another two-out run in the third and put the Loons down 2-1.
Loons starting pitcher Arismendy Ozoria allowed two runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings. Ozoria finished with five strikeouts and two walks. James Campbell, Juan Rodriguez and Scott Griggs combined for three innings of scoreless baseball and four strikeouts.
The Great Lakes Loons will play game two against Lansing Sunday at 2:05 p.m. Starting for the Loons will be Raydel Sanchez (3-6, 4.26) against the Dragons Anthony DeSclafani (9-3, 2.78). Join the Loons for Family Fun in the SUNday at Dow Diamond, where kids in attendance will have the opportunity to run the bases courtesy of Farm Bureau Insurance. The Loons will also be crowning the World's Strongest Loons Fan at the game, presented by Smitty's Iron Works.
