Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa - The Quad Cities River Bandits were no-hit for five innings and fell behind 7-1 in the seventh inning but scored eight runs to match their biggest comeback win of the season in a 9-8 victory Saturday night over the Burlington Bees in front of 5,386 at Modern Woodmen Park.
Burlington extended a 2-1 lead to 7-1 with a five-run seventh inning that included a two-run single from designated hitter Rashun Dixon, a two-run double by right fielder Douglas Landaeta and an RBI single by catcher Nick Rickles. The last two hits came against left-hander Dail Villanueva (8-6), who made his third relief appearance and allowed two runs on two hits in 1 1/3 innings to become the team's win leader. Villanueva had recorded just two outs in the first inning of his start Thursday night against Beloit.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, right-hander Nate Eppley gave up a leadoff single to designated hitter Anthony Garcia and walked first baseman Jeremy Patton. Second baseman Luis Mateo bounced a ball over the head of third baseman Wade Kirkland for an RBI single to make it 7-2. Left fielder Jordan Walton then hit into a fielder's choice, and catcher Casey Rasmus grounded out to second base for the second out and score Patton to close the deficit to 7-3.
With two outs, center fielder Nick Longmire was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second base. Shortstop Matt Williams then hit an RBI single to center field, and third baseman Stephen Piscotty followed with an RBI double down the left field line that caught Kirkland out of position with Longmire running on the pitch. Piscotty's hit made it 7-5 and ended the night for Eppley, who was charged with four hits and six runs - all earned - with one walk in one inning.
Right-hander Raul Alcantara (6-10) entered for the Bees (25-23 second half, 57-60 overall) to face the ninth batter of the inning, right fielder David Medina. Medina lined a ball into left-center field for a game-tying two-run single. Garcia grounded a ball that took a hop off Kirkland to put runners at first and second. Patton then hit a go-ahead, two-run double to right-center field to cap the eight-run rally.
With a 9-7 lead, Villanueva started the eighth inning by hitting shortstop Sean Jamieson, who came around to scored on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Max Muncy against right-hander Kyle Barraclough. Barraclough escaped a jam with the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position to end the eighth inning and then pitched a perfect ninth inning for his first professional save.
Each starter pitched well, as Bees right-hander Drew Granier did not allow a hit until Rasmus homered leading off the sixth inning to bring the River Bandits (23-25, 58-60) within 2-1. Burlington had scored twice against River Bandits starter Tyrell Jenkins, who went five innings and allowed six hits and no walks with five strikeouts. He allowed an RBI single in the second inning to Landaeta and an RBI single in the third inning to Dixon.
The series continues at 5 p.m. Sunday, when River Bandits right-hander Sam Gaviglio (7-7) faces Bees right-hander Blake Hassebrock, who will make his debut in the Midwest League this season.
