Groff, Hawks Power Past Captains

Eric Groff broke a 2-2 tie with a solo home run in the fifth inning Saturday and the South Bend Silver Hawks (60-58, 25-23) beat the Lake County Captains 7-2 in front of 4,823 fans at Coveleski Stadium. The Silver Hawks lead the race for the second half wildcard spot in the eastern division.

Left-hander Keith Hessler (2-1) earned the win for the Silver Hawks, surrendering just two earned runs on six hits over a career-long six innings. Mason Radeke (5-6) was stung with the loss, allowing three earned runs on four hits over five innings. Alex Capaul finished the game with three scoreless innings and earned his second save.

Tom Belza, Ryan Court, Kerry Jenkins and Groff all recorded two hits for the Silver Hawks. Jenkins drove in three runs and extended his hitting streak to 14 games, matching the longest from a Silver Hawks player this season.

Leading 3-2, the Silver Hawks opened the game up with a three-run, five-hit sixth inning against reliever Francisco Valera. Jenkins started the scoring with a sacrifice fly before a pair of two-out hits - an RBI double from Roidany Aguila and an RBI single from Groff. Jenkins added an RBI single in the seventh frame.

Lake County took the early lead on an RBI double from Jerrud Sabourin in the fourth inning but the Silver Hawks struck for a pair of runs in the home half of the inning. Court stroked an RBI double and Jenkins tallied an RBI single.

The Silver Hawks were 5-for-6 with runners in scoring position while Lake County was 1-for-10 in such situations.

The Silver Hawks and Captains play the middle game of a three-game series Sunday at Coveleski Stadium. Left-hander Andrew Barbosa (2-2, 3.94) starts for South Bend and he will be opposed by lefty Elvis Araujo (5-9, 5.20). First pitch is on tap for 2:05 p.m. EST.
