Chiefs Drop Finale in Burlington 10-5

Burlington, IA - The Peoria Chiefs got two RBI from top prospect Jorge Soler in his Midwest League debut Friday night but it wasn't enough as they dropped the finale of a three-game series to the Burlington Bees 10-5 in Iowa. The loss drops the Chiefs to 18-29 in the second half and 53-63 on the season.

The Chiefs scored first for the third straight game when they got to Chris Lamb in the top of the first. Pin-Chieh Chen drew a one-out walk and scored easily on a double into the corner off the bat of Chadd Krist. Dustin Geiger singled Krist to third but Burlington threw him out at the plate on a grounder from Soler and Paul Hoilman grounded out to end the frame.

Burlington jumped in front in the second against Michael Jensen as the first four Bees reached base. Rashun Dixon started with a single and stole second. Max Muncy reached on an infield single with Dixon advancing to third. Burlington tied the game on a Douglas Landaeta single and loaded the bases as Chih-Fang Pan singled to left. With one out Bobby Crocker drew a bases loaded walk to give Burlington a 2-1 lead before Jensen escaped the inning.

The Bees still held a 2-1 lead when they broke the game open in the fourth inning. With a runner on first and one out, Nick Rickles delivered a ground-rule double to center and both runners scored on a double by Crocker. Crocker scored on a fielders' choice and a double by Wade Kirkland put the Bees on top 6-1.

Trailing 7-1, the Chiefs mounted a comeback in the seventh against Lamb and reliever Chas Mye. Yaniel Cabezas drew a walk to start the inning and with one out Zeke DeVoss was hit by a pitch. Chen reached on an infield single to load the bases and Mye took over for Lamb. Krist greeted Mye with a two-run double to left as the Chiefs cut the lead to 7-3. Mye struck out Geiger before Soler delivered a line drive single to left for his first Chiefs hit. The single scored both Chen and Kirst to cut the Burlington lead to 7-5.

Burlington responded in the bottom of the inning against Justin Berg. Dixon singled, stole second and scored on a single by Muncy. After a Chiefs error, Landaeta scored on a sacrifice fly for a 9-5 lead and Pan scored on a second Peoria error to put the Bees back up by five.

Jensen (9-5) allowed six runs on eight hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out two. Berg allowed four runs, one earned, on three hits over two innings of work while walking two. Bryce Shafer allowed one hit over one shutout inning.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Chadd Krist (C) - The Chiefs catcher doubled twice and drove in three runs for the Chiefs Friday night. He also drew a walk and finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.
