Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons fell 12-3 to the Bowling Green Hot Rods Thursday night, who raced out to an early lead they never relinquished. A total of 3,413 Loons fans were present for the popular $1 Family Feast Night, presented by Chemical Bank.
Starting on the mound for the Loons was Jose Dominguez, who struggled to with control, allowing six runs on eight hits over the first two innings, during which he recorded a wild pitch and two walks. Dominguez's night did not improve, as he allowed back-to-back home runs in the third inning.
"A lot of times a pitcher doesn't really have a feel for his stuff [when he first starts out] and for Dominguez, Bowling Green made him pay," Loons manager John Shoemaker said after the game. "He made some mistakes in the middle of the plate and his breaking ball was not sharp. A team like Bowling Green can do some damage in a hurry. It was a tough game for us."
Reliever Matt Laney entered in relief of Dominguez with still two outs to go in the third and limited the Hot Rods to one hit in 2.2 innings of work, fanning four and walking two. Juan Noriega took over in the sixth and faced the minimum through two innings, striking out one. Jason West started the eighth and picked up a quick two outs, but three walks and a fielding error by Delvis Morales prolonged the inning as Bowling Green tacked on their final three runs.
The Loons plated three runs in the contest, one in the fourth on a Nick Akins double, another in the fifth on a Pedro Guerrero home run to left field, and the third on Scott Schebler's 11th double of the season in the eighth. Guerrero, Schebler and Kevin Taylor each had two hits on the night.
The loss moves the Loons (24-23) one game behind Bowling Green (25-22), who holds second place of the Midwest League's eastern division.
The Loons will host the rubber game in their series with the Hot Rods Friday at Dow Diamond for the Loons Super Hero Night. Fans attending the game are encouraged to dress up as their favorite super hero. The night will feature appearances by Captain America and the Amazing Spiderman! Starting on the hill for the Loons will be RHP Ryan O'Sullivan (3-3, 3.11) against the Hot Rods RHP Parker Markel (1-1, 4.91).
The Great Lakes Loons are a sixth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and are in the middle of their 5th Anniversary Celebration, which kicked off in August 2011 and will continue throughout the 2012 season. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
