Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs celebrated the 10th Anniversary Night of Peoria Chiefs Stadium in style with a 4-3 win over the Clinton LumberKings Thursday night. The win puts the Chiefs at 21-26 heading into the rubber match of the series Friday night at 6:30.
A night after getting shutout at home for the first time since June of 2011, the Chiefs jumped on the board right away against starter Ambrioris Hidalgo. Zeke DeVoss and Taiwan Easterling strung together back-to-back singles to start the frame. Wes Darvill made it three-in-a-row with a single to right scoring DeVoss before Jabari Blash threw out Easterling at third. Paul Hoilman ripped a double down the left field line to put two in scoring position for Oliver Zapata who smacked a double to left center field scoring both runners and giving Peoria an early 3-0 lead.
Clinton got one back in the top of the third against Kyler Burke. Michael Dowd singled with one out and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Patrick Brady hit a two-out single to the shortstop Marco Hernandez who overthrew Cuneo at first allowing Dowd to score an unearned run cutting the Chiefs lead to 3-1.
Zapata got it started again in the bottom of the fourth as he and Yaniel Cabezas strung together back-to-back one-out singles putting runners on the corners. Hernandez walked to load the bases, and an out later, DeVoss walked to force home Zapata giving the Chiefs back their three-run lead, 4-1.
The LumberKings did not go quietly in the ninth. Yao-Lin Wang set down the first two batters he faced. Dowd followed a two-out double by Jharmidy De Jesus with a two-bagger of his own plating De Jesus and cutting the lead to 4-2. Jamal Austin kept the rally going with a single to right plating Dowd and cutting Peoria's lead to 4-3. Brady laced a single to right putting two on for Ji-Man Choi. Wang settled down, getting Choi to bounce back to the mound for the final out of the ballgame, securing a 4-3 victory.
Kyler Burke (1-2) turned in six solid innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits. He walked four and struck out four. Sheldon McDonald came in out of the bullpen in the seventh, tossing 1 2/3 hitless innings, walking and striking out a pair.
