Burlington Bees News Release

GENEVA, Ill. - For the second consecutive game the Burlington Bees (20-26) blew a save opportunity and lost to the Kane County Cougars (25-22). The Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth and beat the Bees with a 13-to-12 score.

The loss marks the fourth time the Bees have lost three consecutive games this year and the puts the Bees six game under .500 for the first time. The Bees previous low was five games under .500, a record they've possessed twice this year.

Max Perlman blew a late lead in game one against the Cougars and on Thursday night it was Jeff Urlaub's turn. The Bees' bullpen came into the series with a perfect 8-for-8 in save opportunities before the two losses to Kane County.

The blown save came after an exciting game for both teams' offenses. The Bees scored 12 runs for the third time this month, but suf- fered their first loss after scoring ten runs in a game. A.J. Cole made his Bees debut and gave up a three-run home run in the first inning to Michael Antonio. The right-hander came into the game with a 0-7 record for the Stockton Ports of the Advanced A-ball level, and continued his struggles. Cole pitched five innings and allowed 12 hits and seven runs (five earned). The right-hander struck out six bat- ters without allowing a batter to walk, but he also gave up two home runs. Cole is still looking for his first win since August 13, 2011.

The Bees scored five runs in the third inning to take a 5-to-3 lead. Five of the first seven batters scored and B.A. Vollmuth earned two RBIs in the inning. The Cougars scored again in the bottom of the third, but John Nester retrieved that run after launching his third home run of the year to centerfield. The score was 6-to-4 after four innings.

Both teams continued scoring and the Cougars took a 10-to-9 lead into the top of the eighth inning. But the Bees received an RBI base hit from B.A. Vollmuth that scored John Nester. Nester finished the game with a home run and three runs scored after going 2-for-4 with a walk in game two. Vollmuth earned three RBIs and now leads the Bees with 31 in that category. Sean Jamieson scored on Douglas Landaeta's fourth sacrifice fly RBI this year. The Bees added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Ryan Pineda scored with two outs on what should have been an inning-ending fly-out to center. But Lane Adams dropped the ball and the Bees carried a 12-to-10 lead into the bottom of the ninth.

Urlaub should have recorded an out on a strikeout to start the inning, but the ball popped out of Nester's glove and the runner reached. The Bees allowed the Cougars to load the bases with no outs before Dean Espy hit a ground ball past a diving Vollmuth at third. The hit cleared the bases and the Bees suffered a 13-to-12 loss. The Bees never recorded an out in the bottom of the ninth.

The Bees try to get a win in the series in game three against the Cougars on Friday night at 6 p.m. The Bees have lost five straight games to the Cougars this year. For information on Bees baseball, call (319) 754-5705 or visit www.gobees.com.
