Great Lakes Loons News Release

A huge fifth inning and a dominating pitching performance by Beloit right-hander Jeff Manship keyed an 8-1 Snappers' victory in front of 4,746 fans at Dow Diamond.

The Snappers scored twice in the first inning on RBI singles by Daniel Valencia and Garrett Olsen off Loons' starter Michael Gardner (3-2). The Loons pulled to within one with a run in the first inning on a ground ball double play hit into by Francisco Lizarraga.

Beloit added six runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach. The inning was highlighted by a three-run triple by Snappers' centerfielder Joe Benson to right field.

Gardner, starting in place of Clayton Kershaw, pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing seven hits and seven runs (six earned) while walking two and striking out three. Miguel Sanfler pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing three hits, one run, a walk and three strikeouts. Garrett White came in and pitched a scoreless ninth for the Loons. Kershaw's injury isn't considered serious, and holding him out was considered a precautionary measure.

After surrendering three hits in the first inning, Manship (3-0) retired 19 of the next 20 Loons he faced to pick up the win. Jesus Carnevale pitched the final two innings, giving up no hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

The Loons record falls to 11-17 while the Snappers improve to 15-10.

The Loons will take on these same Beloit Snappers on Sunday afternoon at Dow Diamond. There will be a free pre-game Youth Clinic courtesy of Farm Bureau Insurance. The event will begin at noon and space is limited. After the game, kids will be able to run the bases. Midwest League leader in earned run average, right-hander Francisco Felix gets the ball for the Loons going up against Jose Lugo for Beloit. Felix comes into the game with a record of 1-1 with a 0.36 earned run average, while Lugo is also 1-1 but with a 3.57 ERA. Gametime is 3:05pm.

Great seats remain for the final two games of the series, and you can get yours by calling 989-837-BALL or by visiting Loons.com.
