Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

The Cedar Rapids Kernels committed a season-high six errors that led to three unearned runs and a 5-4 loss to the Swing of the Quad Cities in front of 2,824 fans Saturday evening at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Three of the Kernels six errors came on pickoff attempts, but despite the errors, the Kernels came very close to pulling the game out of the fire as they trailed 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth but ended the game with runners stranded at first and second.

Sean Garceau (2-0) picked up the win for the Swing in relief of starter Eddie Degerman. Kenny Maiques earned his seventh save, allowing two hits but striking out two in an inning pitched.

Kernel reliever P.J. Connelly (0-1) was the tough-luck loser, giving up an unearned run in two innings of work. Connelly allowed no hits and a walk and struck out three. Kernels starter Doug Brandt allowed seven hits and three runs (one earned) over five innings with one walk and five strikeouts.

The Kernels had 11 hits on the night with Peter Bourjos, Chris Pettit, P.J. Phillips and Stantrel Smith all going 2 for 4. Phillips and Smith each had a double and Smith had a stolen base. Bourjos added 2 RBI and Mark Trumbo drove in a run as the DH today.

The loss drops Cedar Rapids to 13-12 as Quad Cities improves to 16-13.

The Kernels and Swing play game 3 of this four game set on Sunday afternoon at 2 pm. It will be a KDAT Sunday Family Fun Day which means $1 popcorn, autographs from the Kernels from 1:20 to 1:40, Travel Advisors Baseball Vacation Bingo during the game and running the bases after the game, sponsored by Steak N Shake.
