Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Former Roger Clemens Award finalist and 2006 fourth-rounder Eddie Degerman has been promoted to Quad Cities from Extended Spring Training and will start on Saturday night for the Swing in Cedar Rapids, the team announced Saturday morning. In a corresponding move, southpaw reliever Brian Schroeder has been transferred from Quad Cities to Extended Spring Training.
Degerman, a 23-year-old right-hander out of Rice University, was a fourth round pick by the Cardinals in the 2006 draft. The native of Granada Hills, California, went 2-1 with a 2.76 ERA over nine starts for State College during his pro debut last summer, racking up 53 strikeouts over 42.1 innings pitched.
During his final season of college Degerman was one of four finalists for the Roger Clemens Award, handed out annually to the nation's best pitcher. He went 13-2 with a 2.00 ERA and set a Conference USA record with 172 strikeouts in 130.2 innings, good enough to receive Baseball America First Team All-American and Academic All American honors. In three years with the Owls, Degerman went 22-4 with a 2.57 ERA and 328 strikeouts over 256 career innings.
To make room for Degerman on the roster, LHP Brian Schroeder was transferred to Extended Spring Training. The son of former NFL quarterback Jay Schroeder, Brian had thrown six consecutive scoreless outings to lower his ERA to 1.17 over 7.2 innings pitched this season.
To complete the reshuffling of the pitching staff, RHP Mike Schellinger was moved from the tandem starting rotation into the bullpen. The native of Syracuse, New York, is 1-2 with a 3.43 ERA, one save, and 22 strikeouts over 21 innings of work. Three of his six appearances this season have come out of the pen, as Schellinger has posted a 2.70 ERA while notching both his win and his save as a reliever.
The Swing of the Quad Cities roster currently stands at 25 active players, the maximum allowed by Midwest League rules. An updated roster accompanies this release.
