Burlington Bees News Release
Grand Rapids, MI (May 5, 2007) - Deik Scram was 3-4 with a double, two triples, and scored three runs to lead the West Michigan Whitecaps (15-12) to a 5-1 victory over the Burlington Bees (12-15) at Fifth Third Ballpark tonight. Scram extended his hitting streak to ten games and the Whitecaps go up 2-0 in this series.
Scram helped the Whitecaps get on the board right away against Bees' starter Everett Teaford. In the bottom of the first, leadoff man Gorkys Hernandez reached on an error in front of Scram's first triple to left-center field and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Strieby for an early 2-0 lead. In the third, Scram lined a double to left and when Joe Dickerson bobbled the ball on the warning track for an error, Scram raced to third. Strieby followed with a base hit to make it 3-0 and scored from second later in the inning on a two-out single by Santo De Leon to extend the lead to 4-0. Teaford (1-3) settled in after that and worked all the way into the bottom of the eighth inning before giving up the Whitecaps final run. Again it was Scram getting it started with a triple to straight away center and he scored on a wild pitch. Teaford got one out in the eighth before giving way to Chris Hayes out of the bullpen. His 7.1 innings are a career-high and is the longest outing by a Bees' pitcher this season. Despite working deep into the game, Teaford suffers his third straight defeat, allowing all five runs (four earned) on seven hits. Hayes made just two pitches before getting De Leon to hit into a double play to end the eighth.
The Bees never got much working offensively against Whitecaps' starter Angel Castro (3-1). The Bee got the first men on in the top of the first inning, but Jeff Bianchi bounced into a double play and Castro got out of the inning. Bianchi did score the Bees' only run in the fourth. He led off the inning with a single and moved to second when Michael Thompson was hit by a pitch. A flyout to right got Bianchi to third and Scott Lucas brought him in with a sacrifice fly to left. That was all Castro allowed through seven innings. Jeff Gerbe pitched a perfect eighth. Ed Clelland came in for the ninth, but with two outs and Bianchi on base after a walk, left due to injury forcing Randor Bierd to come in and get the final out.
Thompson finished 0-3 to end his season-high five-game hitting streak and Dickerson was 0-3 to end a streak of seven straight starts with a hit.
The Bees and Whitecaps get back at it tomorrow afternoon for game three of this series. The Bees will send RH Mario Santiago (1-1, 2.30) to the mound against LH Duane Below (1-1, 3.24). The game starts at 1:00 Central time and will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 12:40.
