Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Davenport, Iowa - The Quad Cities River Bandits dropped their fourth- straight game following a 2-1 loss to the Great Lakes Loons on Thursday at Modern Woodmen Park.
Offensively, the Bandits were shut down by Great Lakes' pitching, managing just four hits and two walks on the night while striking out 12 times. Quad Cities' pitchers scattered 11 hits, three walks and allowed two earned runs while striking out 12 batters.
Q.C. reliever Christian Crosby took the loss (0-2, 16.88 ERA), while Great Lakes reliever Emmet Sheehan (5-2, 3.41 ERA) picked up his fifth win of the season.
After leaving two runners stranded in the top of the first, the Loons scored the game's first run in the second after a one-out, RBI single by left-fielder Harold Restituyo off Bandits' starter Rito Lugo. The Q.C. lefty got out of the inning after a strikeout and ground out to limit the damage with the Bandits down 1-0.
Quad Cities evened the score in the bottom half of the frame after a two-out RBI single from third baseman Cam Williams off Loons' starter Carlos Duran, plating shortstop Tyler Tolbert. The rally started with a two-out single from Tolbert, followed by a walk from designated hitter Luca Tresh. First baseman Felix Familia grounded out to end the inning with the game tied 1-1.
Great Lakes notched a single and a walk against Lugo in the top of the third, but the Bandits' starter struck out the side to keep things tied. Offensively, Quad Cities was held scoreless and reached base three times over the next seven innings.
Lugo ended his night allowing one earned run on five hits while striking out six and walking two batters over 4.0 innings. The outing was Lugo's longest of the season for the Bandits.
Cosby followed Lugo in relief, tossing a scoreless top of the fifth but gave up the go-ahead run in the following inning. The left-handed reliever surrendered back-to-back singles to begin the sixth, picked off the lead runner at second base and struck out leadoff man Alex De Jesus, but he gave up an RBI single to Jorbit Vivas to put the Loons up 2-1. Cosby allowed one earned run and five hits while striking out three and walking one over 2.0 innings.
Right-hander Anderson Paulino tossed the final 3.0 scoreless innings for the Bandits, allowing one hit, striking out three, and walking one hitter.
A two-out, ninth inning rally was sparked by left-fielder Juan Carlos Negret who doubled off Sheehan to put the tying run in scoring position with Tolbert coming to the plate. Negret tallied two of the Bandits four hits on the night. Tolbert worked a 2-0 count before taking a 95 mph fastball deep to right field, but the potential game-changing hit fell just short as Tolbert flew out to end the game.
Great Lakes used a combination of Aldry Acosta and Sheehan to shut down the Bandits over the final six innings. Acosta tossed a scoreless fifth inning while Sheehan allowed two hits while striking out a season-high 10 and walking none over 5.0 innings.
The loss drops the Bandits' second half record to 5-13 on the season while the Loons move to 12-6.
Quad Cities will look to snap their four-game skid and win their first game of the series Friday when they send left-hander Ryan Kaufman (1-4, 5.21 ERA) to the mound against Great Lakes' righty Nick Nastrini (2-2, 4.71 ERA). First pitch between the River Bandits and Loons is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Modern Woodmen Park.
