Lake County Captains News Release
(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Picantes de Lake County (44-39) earned comeback win number 14 this season, plating three in the seventh to win 3-2 on a clear sky and sunny Thursday evening at Classic Park.
Aaron Davenport had his longest start of the season, finishing six innings of work. It started with a hiccup. After allowing a double, Ruben Ibarra hammered a ball off the top of the left field bleachers making it 2-0. From there, the right-hander allowed just three baserunners. The 2021 Sixth Round pick struck out nine, matching a season-best which included four to end innings.
Lake County's offense through the first six innings left nine runners on base. In the third, Alexfri Planez reached on a catchers' interference, Petey Halpin singled and with two outs Gabriel Rodriguez walked. A flyout to centerfield ended the threat.
The Picantes broke through in the seventh. Milan Tolentino and Joe Naranjo both singled, then following two strikeouts, Johnathan Rodriguez stepped in. Rodriguez was retired twice, previously in the game with two runners on. This time, Rodriguez belted a ball over the right-center field wall, to give Lake County a 3-2 lead, his tenth homer of the season.
Raymond Burgos in relief pitched the seventh and eighth inning and retired all six Dragons he faced. Trey Benton got the ninth and after allowing a walk, earned a strikeout and forced a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.
Despite going 1 for 15 with runners in scoring position, the Picantes got the win. It is Lake County's second consecutive one-run victory and the twelfth this season.
Tomorrow Friday, July 15 will see game three between Lake County and Dayton. It is a Fireworks Friday presented by Meijer. First pitch is at 7:00 p.m.
Coverage of the game can be found on WJCU.org/Captains and the MiLB First Pitch app.
