Peoria Chiefs News Release

PEORIA, IL - The Chiefs were hopeful to break their cold streak against South Bend Thursday but the Cubs rode another strong first inning to a third-consecutive win over Peoria by a 5-1 final.

For the third night in a row, Pete Crow-Armstrong reached base to begin the contest, this time via a dropped third strike. After swiping second base, Fabian Pertuz sent a base hit into right field to put the Cubs on top 1-0 just a pair of batters into the night. Later in the frame, an RBI fielder's choice plated a second run, which was followed by a hard hit grounder in the hole to shortstop. The throw skipped out of the glove of LJ Jones at first to bring in two more, ending the first inning with the visitors on top 4-0.

In the second, Fabian Pertuz climbed in again and tacked on a fifth South Bend run with his second hit of the evening. Peoria answered quickly in the bottom half of the inning On the first pitch of the frame, LJ Jones stepped to the dish and demolished an inside heater for his team-leading seventh long ball of the year to make it a 5-1 score.

The game stayed locked at that score through the middle innings, as Austin Love exited after five innings. He gave way to the Chiefs bullpen who deserved a tip of the cap, as Nathanael Heredia and Gianluca Dalatri combined to stifle the South Bend bats the rest of the way through four shutout innings.

Trailing by a quartet and needing a rally down the stretch, the Chiefs did not go quietly. Brady Whalen started the rally by reaching on a fielder's choice, and Jacob Buchberger punched a single through the right side to set up Jones who earned a four-pitch free pass. Down to their final out of the night, Osvaldo Tovalin was called on to pinch-hit with the bases filled and the game hanging in the balance. A broken bat hopper to second base was gloved cleanly, but Tovalin forced a bang-bang play at the bag that was called an out to end the ballgame.

The Cubs scooped up their third victory of the series, and have now been victorious in 14 of 15 contests this season versus Peoria. Game four of the series is penciled for 6:35 tomorrow night. Zane Mills toes the slab for Peoria, with South Bend featuring Manuel Espinoza.
