THE LAST GAME- Mississippi took the lead as they scored in the third. Onil Joseph led off with a double to left-center. Mike Rozema then singled to center, which brought Joseph to the plate. After a pitch apparently hit Yunel Escobar, Barbaro Canizares reached on a fielding error. Matt Esquivel singled down the third base line to give Mississippi a 2-0 lead after four.
The Braves extended their lead with a three-spot in the sixth. Yunel Escobar led off with a double. Barbaro Canizares reached on a fielder's choice. Jarrod Saltalamacchia then doubled to left-center bringing Escobar to the plate with the Braves third run. With runners at second and third, Onil Joseph doubled to right bringing both Canizares and Saltalamacchia to the plate to make the score 5-0 in favor of the Braves.
The Lookouts got on the board in the eighth when Chris Dickerson led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Anderson Machado to make the score 5-1 Braves. Mississippi won the game 5-1 but Birmingham defeated West Tenn 3-1 keeping Chattanooga 2.0 games ahead of the Diamond Jaxx with 8 games to play in the first half.
PROBABLE STARTER: RHP Eddy Valdez will look to get the Lookouts back in the win column. In eight starts and five relief appearances this season. Valdez has posted a 1-3 record with an ERA of 4.86. In 46.1 innings this season, Valdez has allowed 29 runs, 25 earned, on 53 hits. He has issued 14 walks, struck out 40 and the opposition is hitting a respectable .291 against him. Last season, Valdez split time between Chattanooga and Sarasota. He combined to go 4-5 with a 4.45 ERA. He was signed as non-drafted free agent on 10/10/99.
The Braves will send LHP Chris Waters to the hill for his 12th start of the season. To date, Waters is 3-3 with a 3.97 ERA. In 68.0 innings this season, he has given up 33 runs, 30 earned, while walking 33 and striking out 55. The league is batting .253 against him. Waters earned his third win of the season on May 30th against the Lookouts. He out-dueled Steve Kelly, winning 7-3.

- The Lookouts are batting .226 against left-handers this season. They have also posted an 8-10 record when facing a left-handed starting pitcher.

THIS DATE IN BASEBALL HISTORY:
1944 - Joe Nuxhall, two months short of his 16th birthday and the youngest player in major league history, had a less than spectacular debut with the Cincinnati Reds. After retiring the first batter, Nuxhall gave up two singles, five runs, five walks and a wild pitch . . . and that was in the first inning. St. Louis won the game, 18-0. The Cardinals tied a major league record by stranding 18 runners in the game. Nuxhall finished his first year with an ERA of 67.50. His career lasted 16 years and he ended with a career ERA of 3.90.
1972 - Atlanta's Hank Aaron hit his 649th home run to move into second place on the all-time home run list. The only one left to pass was Babe Ruth. The Braves beat the Philadelphia Athletics, 15-3. It was also Aaron's 14th career grand slam, tying the National League record, set by Gil Hodges.
1974 - Mike Schmidt got a long hit . . . a really long hit. The Philadelphia star hit a public address speaker in the Astrodome . . . 117 feet in the air and more than 300 feet from home plate. Neither of the two runners on base at the time could score and Schmidt ended up with . . . a single. The Phillies beat the Astros, 12-0.
