THE LAST GAME- The Braves take it to the Looks once again, winning tonight 6-4. With tonight's loss, the Lookouts have now lost two series this season.
The Lookouts got the bats hot early as they put two runs on the board in the first inning, highlighted by back-to-back doubles by Joey Votto and Noochie Varner. The Braves came back in the top of the second with a run off a Phil Dumatrait wild pitch. The Braves broke the game open in the fourth inning, as they were able to score three runs. Michael Rosamond led the inning off with a solo home run over the left field wall. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Josh Arteaga, Paul Bush, and Onil Joseph had consecutive singles to plate two more runs.
With the score 4-2, the Braves added insult to injury, as they put two more runs on the board in the sixth inning. The Lookouts tried to make it interesting with a run in the sixth and seventh, however, they were not able to complete the comeback.
Noochie Varner, with two more RBI, led the Lookouts' offensive attack. Varner's two RBI tonight gives him 34 for the month. Lookouts' starter Phil Dumatrait suffered his fourth loss of the season after tossing 5.2 innings and allowing six runs, four earned, on eight hits. His record now stands at 3-4. Braves starter Paul Bush went 6.0 innings and allowed three runs on six hits en rout to the victory. His record is now an even 3-3.
PROBABLE STARTER: RHP Travis Chick will take the ball tonight for his 10th start of the season. To date, Chick is 2-1 with a 4.85 ERA. During May, Chick went 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in five starts. In 42.2 innings this season, he has allowed 23 earned runs on 46 hits, while walking 17 and striking out 37. The league is currently hitting .275 against him. In his last start versus the Smokies on 5/27/06, Chick tossed 6.0 innings and allowed five runs on nine hits. He walked three and struck out six. He did not factor in to the decision. Last season, Chick was traded to the Reds organization from the Padres on 7/23/05. He made eight starts with the Lookouts and went 2-2 with a 4.86 ERA. He made one start against the Braves last season with Chattanooga. He pitched four innings and allowed five runs on eights and did not receive a decision.
The Braves will counter with RHP Matt Wright. Wright has made six starts and one relief appearance this season, earning a save. To date, he is 3-2 with a 2.65 ERA. In 37.1 innings of work, Wright has surrendered 14 runs, 11 earned, on 29 hits, while walking 13 and striking out 44. In his last start on 5/27/06 against Birmingham, Wright pitched 6.0 innings and allowed no runs on only one hit while striking out seven and walking two en rout to his third victory of the season. The Atlanta Braves selected Wright in the 21st round of the 2000 draft.

NEWS 'N' NOTES:
- Noochie Varner finished May with the second best batting average in the League at .404. He finished the month with the most RBI in the Southern League with 34. The Smokies James D'Antona finished second to Varner with 24.
- With his two doubles last night, Lookouts first baseman Joey Votto now leads the league with 18.
- Ben Kozlowski has been traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers organization.

1977 - Dennis Eckersley of Cleveland came close. A Ruppert Jones fifth inning home run stopped Eckersley's streak after 22-1/3 consecutive no-hit innings. The Indians beat the Seattle Mariners, 7-1. Cy Young had set the record . . . with 23 innings.
1996 - In the Southern League, Travis Buckley of Chattanooga pitched a no-hitter. The Lookouts beat the Huntsville Stars, 6-0.
