*Diamond Jaxx in Race for First Place*
Following a ten game homestand in which the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx went 4-6, the team hit the road for a quick five game set in Huntsville against the Stars.
For the first game of the series on Sunday, May 28th, the Diamond Jaxx sent J.R. Mathes to the hill. Mathes kept the Diamond Jaxx in the game allowing just two runs on three hits while striking out eight, but received no run support in his five and two-thirds innings. The Diamond Jaxx trailed heading into the eighth inning and then turned on the offensive magic. Chris Walker led off the inning with a triple and was driven in via a single by Eric Patterson. Patterson was able to advance to third on an errant pick-off attempt. Nic Jackson drove in Patterson with a single to tie the game. Following a Brandon Sing walk, Scott Moore sacrificed the runners to second and third. Huntsville then intentionally walked Adam Greenberg to load the bases for Miguel Negron. Negron sent a pitch into the stratosphere over the right field wall for a grand slam and a 6-2 lead that would prove to be the final.
Carlos Marmol pitched for the Diamond Jaxx on Memorial Day, May 29th. Marmol worked only three and two-thirds innings allowing two runs on four hits while striking out four. Trailing 2-0 and headed into the seventh inning, the Jaxx found the comeback magic for the second night in a row. Adam Greenberg, Carlos Rojas, and Richard Lewis all took walks in succession. Chris Walker grounded into a double play to score Greenberg and advanced Rojas to third. Gary Cates hit a ground ball too hot for Huntsville to handle, scoring Rojas and setting up a go-ahead double for Nic Jackson. Cates scored making it 3-2 and that would be the final in the Diamond Jaxx victory.
Tuesday, May 30th's game was postponed due to rain. To make up for the postponed game, the Diamond Jaxx played a double header with the Stars on Wednesday night, May 31st. In the first game of the night, Diamond Jaxx starter Chris Shavers gave up four runs, three earned, on six hits through four and one-third innings. He left the game with the lead and was in line for the win. Richard Lewis proved to be the Jaxx star of the game going 3-for-5 with a homer, his first of the year, and four runs batted in. Chris Walker went 4-for-5 while driving in a run and Eric Patterson also had a RBI on his lone hit. Jose Reyes and Nic Jackson had two hits each and one RBI a piece for the final two tallies of the first game. Pignatiello put an exclamation on the end of a four-run eight by closing the door for the Jaxx 10-6 win.
In the nightcap Paul Schappert worked only three innings allowing one run on five hits for the Diamond Jaxx. The Jaxx nine hit attack was lead by Gary Cates, Nic Jackson, and Adam Greenberg with two hits each and Cates driving in two runs. Jackson and Brandon Sing also tacked on one run each as the Jaxx sent the Stars to their 13th straight loss in a 5-2 victory. Carlos Vasquez and Clay Rapada worked the final four frames picking up the win and the save respectively.
The Diamond Jaxx strong road play combined with a slight skid by the Chattanooga Lookouts, have the Jaxx within one game of first place with 16 games left in the first half of the season. West Tenn has one more game in Huntsville tonight before coming back home for ten straight, five with the Tennessee Smokies and five with the Birmingham Barons. Make sure to catch the Diamond Jaxx in action at the "Big Chip" or listen to all the action live on News Talk 101.5FM.
