Mississippi Braves News Release
Chattanooga, TN - The Chattanooga Lookouts put the skids on an early Mississippi Braves comeback when Darnell Sweeney hit a fourth-inning grand slam off David Bromberg, pulling away en route to a 15-4 decision on Thursday night at AT&T Field.
The Braves trailed 5-1 early but pulled it to a one-run game in the fourth with the tying run stranded at third base. The Lookouts led off the fourth with a Brian Cavazos-Galvez single, a Daniel Mayora walk and a Noel Cuevas single to load the bases.
Lookouts starting pitcher Tyson Brummett grounded into a force at the plate but the bases stayed loaded with one out, setting up Sweeney's slam, his fourth homer of the year, to make it 9-4.
That set off a chain of Chattanooga (18-28) runs, rattling off 10 unanswered to pull away. The Lookouts posted six more runs combined over the fifth, sixth, and seventh, and Mississippi (25-21) didn't have another comeback up their sleeves.
Bromberg (2-3) suffered the loss, allowing nine runs, all earned, on seven hits over 3 1/3 innings with three strikeouts and three walks. Brummett (4-3) earned the win for the Lookouts, allowing four runs- three earned- on eight hits in five frames with five strikeouts.
The Braves had an early lead in the second when Kyle Kubitza reached on an error by Sweeney at short- his third in two games- and Elmer Reyes and David Rohm got back-to-back singles to move him around and knock him in.
Chattanooga jumped on the board in the second. Bromberg issued a walk to O'Koyea Dickson and a single to Chris O'Brien. After Cavazos-Galvez struck out swinging, Mayora and Cuevas each knocked in a run with a single to make it 2-1. The Lookouts loaded up the bases again and Ryan Adams hit a bloop three-run single on which Mycal Jones just missed making a spectacular sliding catch.
The Braves started chipping away in the third when Cedric Hunter plated Jones with an RBI single. In the fourth the Braves plated two, including a Bromberg safety squeeze and another Hunter knock to plate Elmer Reyes.
Adams finished the day with five RBIs, while the Braves were led by Hunter who went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI singles. Reyes also finished with two knocks to send his league-leading average to .364.
Now the Braves try to regain the series edge in Friday night's game three at 6:15 PM CT, with JR Graham (0-2, 4.40) taking the hill against left-hander Chris Reed (3-2, 2.19).
