Mobile BayBears News Release
KODAK, TN -- Dustin Martin's four hit night set up for plenty of offense at the top of the order, and RHP Justin Fitzgerald tossed 5.2 innings of one-run ball as the BayBears defeated the Tennessee Smokies 7-1 on Friday night at Smokies Park. The victory is Mobile's second win in the first three games of the series. The BayBears have now won 10 of their last 12 games.
Mobile wasted little time of Smokies RHP Dae-Eun Ree (2-2), as Sean Jamieson doubled and advanced to third when Dustin Martin reached base with a single in the next at bat with no out in the top of the first. David Peralta drove home Jamieson with a run scoring groundout to put Mobile ahead 1-0. They would add another three runs in the fifth, as Fitzgerald and Jamieson singled and Martin drove home one run with a RBI double. Peralta singled in the following at bat, scoring Jamieson. After Jon Griffin walked, Jake Lamb drove in Martin on a sacrifice fly to left to give BayBears a 4-1 edge.
Fitzgerald (3-0) earned his third win in a BayBears uniform retiring 11 of the first 13 batters he faced. He would end up tossing 5.2 innings, while allowing one run on six hits, striking out four.
Tennessee got on the board in the sixth inning when Kris Bryant recorded an RBI double off or Fitzgerald cutting the Mobile lead to 4-1. Mobile not only got the one run back in the seventh but added two more on top of it. Martin recorded his fourth hit of the night, reaching on a single. Peralta followed with a double putting runners at second and third for Griffin who scored Martin with an RBI single. After a strike out by Lamb, Garrett Weber reached on a fielder's choice and earned a RBI when Peralta scored from third on the play. Raywilly Gomez capped the BayBears scoring with a RBI single that scored Griffin and gave Mobile a 7-1 lead.
The BayBears and Smokies continue their series on Saturday at 6:15 PM. RHP Charles Brewer (0-0, 0.00) makes his first start of the year for Mobile against RHP Joe Gardner (0-0, 0.00) for the Smokies.
