Chattanooga Lookouts News Release

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Lookouts bounced back from a disappointing home opener to beat the Biscuits, 10-2, in Wednesday night action at AT&T Field. Scott Elbert, Francisco Felix, and Victor Garate combined to throw a two-hitter, while the Lookouts bats broke out of their slump in a big way by blasting 11 hits. The Biscuits capitalized on some sloppy defense by the Lookouts in the first frame.

Desmond Jennings led off by reaching first on a fielding error committed by third baseman Josh Bell. Jennings quickly swiped second, and Brandon Chaves followed with a walk. A throwing error by shortstop Justin Sellers enabled the speedy Jennings to score. Starting pitcher Scott Elbert, however, settled down to record three outs to stop the hemorrhaging.

The speedy Jennings hurt the Lookouts again in the second inning. With two outs, Jennings walked and proceeded to steal second. An infield single by Chaves advanced Jennings to third. With runners now on the corners, Elbert threw to first on a pickoff attempt, but the crafty Jennings immediately broke for home on the play. A throw by first baseman Gaby Martinez to home resulted in a close play at the plate, but the throw was not caught cleanly, and Jennings successfully swiped home. Chattanooga countered in the second with two runs of their own. Jamie Hoffmann ripped a line-drive homer just over the left field wall to put the Lookouts on the board. After a Josh Bell pop out to second, J.D. Closser walked. Juan Gonzalez pushed Closser to third with a double to right. A ground ball to the shortstop up the middle knotted-up the score, 2-2.

The Lookouts went ahead in the third with two more runs in the third. Justin Sellers started the rally with a single and proceeded to steal second after an Andrew Lambo pop out. Gaby Martinez filled the open spot at first by forcing a walk. Hoffman followed with a walk of his own to load the bases. A Josh Bell fly out scored Sellers and allowed Martinez to tag up and advance to third. The bases became loaded, once again, after pitcher Aneury Rodriguez (0-2) walked J.D. Closser. Rodriguez continued to struggle with his control, as he proceeded to walk Juan Gonzalez; thus, forcing in a run. A pitching change was made, and reliever Brian Baker induced an Adam Godwin ground out to end the threat.

Chattanooga's offense kept rolling in the fourth. Jovanny Rosario began the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a Justin Sellers double. An Andrew Lambo sacrifice fly to left put the score at 5-2. Rosario had another hit in the fifth, but this time instead of beginning a rally, he consummated a run by means of an RBI single to center.

After taking a breather in the sixth, the Lookouts continued putting the heat on the Biscuits in the seventh. Jamie Hoffmann walked to begin the inning. Josh Bell singled to left, advancing Hoffmann to third. J.D. Closser, who had previously displayed excellent patience at the plate, showed a little power this time by ripping a double to center, scoring Hoffmann. Juan Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly to center to give the Lookouts an 8-2 lead. After an Adam Godwin hit by pitch, Jovanny Rosario collected his fourth hit of the evening and his second RBI with a single. After a Justin Sellers ground out, Andrew Lambo singled to bring home Godwin to put the score at its final resting point, 10-2.

Francisco Felix (1-0), who threw 2.2 innings in relief of Elbert, was credited with the win. He yielded just one hit and one hit, while striking out three during the outing. Chattanooga will continue with their five-game homestand against the Montgomery Biscuits at 7:15 P.M., tomorrow. Tickets for this games or any other Lookouts home game can be purchased at the Lookouts Box Office at AT&T Field, online at www.lookouts.com, or by calling (423) 267-4849.
