Mobile BayBears News Release

Mobile, AL --- Hector Ambriz and Scott Maine combined on a five-hit shutout as Mobile evened its series against Carolina with a 2-0 victory before 1,267 fans on Wednesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Ambriz (W, 1-1), who lost 13 games in the Southern League last season, matched his Double-A career-high by working seven innings. Ambriz fanned eight while issuing just one walk over his 75-pitch performance. Maine (S, 1) notched his first save of the season by scattering three hits over his two innings.

Carolina's Travis Wood (L, 0-1) was nearly as brilliant as Ambriz, carting a four-hit shutout into the Mobile sixth. Wood retired the first two hitters before permitting a double and a walk and being replaced by Ruben Medina. Cyle Hankerd drooped a 1-1 pitch inches inside the shallow right field line for a two-run double as Mobile (5-2) assumed the game's first lead.

The Mudcats (4-3) remained in a first place tie with West Tenn despite the loss. Sean Henry collected two of the Mudcats' five hits batting leadoff in lieu of Chris Heisey, who did not start Wednesday night. Heisey was hit on the left elbow in the third inning of Tuesday's series opener and was removed from the game. Heisey did pinch-hit on Wednesday night, singling in the eighth inning.

Jordan Smith (1-0, 2.57) starts the series' third game on Thursday night against Barry Enright (0-0, 1.80) at 8:05 PM ET.
