Bakersfield, Calif. - Chris Kenady scored twice and Olivier Michaud stopped 44 shots as the Long Beach Ice Dogs defeated the Bakersfield Condors 3-1 in front of 4,122 fans at the Rabobank Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Brad Mehalko gave the Condors an early 1-0 lead with his 16th goal of the season, coming on the power play. Long Beach answered, however, chipping in a loose puck at the side of the net to make it 1-1 halfway through the period. New goaltender Jason Wolfe couldn't stop Cory Urquhart on a late breakaway for the Ice Dogs, and the Condors trailed 2-1 after 20 minutes.
Bakersfield pelted the Long Beach net with 17 second period shots but could get nothing past Olivier Michaud. Wolfe made the save of the period however, stopping Matt Shasby on a breakaway in the final minute of the stanza and stopping his rebound chance as well.
Long Beach put it out of reach with a power play goal just 14 seconds into the third period. They extended their lead to five points over the Condors and Bakersfield dropped their third straight for the first time all season. Wolfe finished with 35 saves in his Condors debut. In addition, the Alaska Aces moved into second place in the West Division, passing the Condors up with a 3-1 victory over the Dayton Bombers this afternoon.
The Condors head to Long Beach on Friday night and return home to face the San Diego Gulls at the Rabobank Arena on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. SpongeBob Squarepants will be in the house, courtesy of Bright House Networks, Real Rock 93.1 and Subway.
