Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
FLORENCE, KY - The Traverse City Beach Bums'(6-12) gave up four home runs to the Florence Freedom(6-12), as the Bums fell by the final score of 10-5.
After both teams went down in order in the first, Andrew Godbold smashed a two-run homer over the left field wall, scoring Collins Cuthrell who doubled earlier in the inning. Garrett Vail, Travis Weaver, and Andre Mercurio, each followed with singles. The last one plated Vail, and the Freedom led 3-0.
In the top of the fourth, Steven Patterson led off with a single. After Jose Vargas reached on a fielder's choice, Will Kengor then singled, moving Vargas to third. Brandon Thomasson was next and he smacked a two-run double to left field, cutting the deficit to one. Connor Hofmann came to bat next and got his first hit in a Bums uniform with a single. Thomasson then scored on a Giancarlo Brugnoni sacrifice fly to right, tying the game. Nate Causey gave the Bums the lead, driving home Hofmann with a single of his own.
Florence tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run by Godbold, his second blast of the game, and fourth of the season. In the fifth, with two away, Godbold walked, stole two bases, then scored on a fielding error, giving the Freedom the lead. Daniel Fraga scored on another Traverse City error in the sixth inning, and it was a two-run disadvantage.
After a walk to Godbold in the seventh, Garrett Vail hit an opposite field home run, his 2nd, to extend the Florence lead to four runs. In the eighth, it was Collins Cuthrell's turn to go yard as he hit his 2nd, a two-run shot, scoring Austin Newell, who reached to lead off the inning.
In the top of the ninth, the Beach Bums' Giancarlo Brugnoni got in on the act with a solo home run over the centerfield wall, for his first hit and homer of the season, but that is all they could muster, as the Freedom ended a five game losing streak.
Zach Isler got the start and the complete game for the Freedom, striking out seven while walking none, to improve his record to 2-1. Ashton Perritt enter the game in the fifth inning, lasting two innings, and allowed one earned run, on one hit, and two walks, and he struck out one, but he is stuck with the loss for his first decision of the season.
The Beach Bums and Florence Freedom continue the weekend series with game two tomorrow night. Stetson Nelson will get the start for Florence and Michael Shreve takes to the mound for the Beach Bums, trying to end this four game losing streak. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05pm and Tom Willms will have the Miller Lite Pre-Game Show at 5:45pm, on 101.9- The Bay.
Don't forget: Coming up on Tuesday, the Beach Bums return home to begin a six game home-stand. It will be our second Two-For-Tuesday of the season. Tickets are buy one, get one free, for all fans. You don't want to miss out.
The Beach Bums business offices are open from 9am to 6pm, Monday through Friday. Sponsorships, season tickets, group packages, patio tables, and suite, are all currently available for the 2016 season. The Box Office & Gift Ship are now open with non-gameday hours of 10am to 6pm Monday through Friday, 10am to 4pm on Saturday. Wuerfel Park is closed on non-gameday Sundays. Stadium hours are extended on gamedays.
