Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners returned home on Friday night at Rent One Park against the Lake Erie Crushers and after a scoreless game through six, it was the visitors who broke through first, scoring in the seventh, eighth and ninth frames to win the game 5-2 in a game that featured eleven pitching changes and lasted three hours and 50 minutes.

Jarett Miller and former Miner Steve Hagen matched each other zero-for-zero on the scoreboard, with Hagen departing after no runs allowed in four and two-thirds with seven strikeouts and Miller pitching into the seventh inning, retiring 11 batters in a row between third and sixth innings. After a walk and a hit leading off the seventh, however, and mid-at bat to Brendan Costantino, Miller (0-2) had to leave the game. New reliever Chris DeBoo came in and after Costantino walked, a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Juan Avila made it 1-0 Lake Erie.

The Crushers added on in the eighth when Connor Oliver tripled and later scored on an RBI single by Will Beckwith for a 2-0 visitors lead. With two men on, rookie Nick Palacios made his professional debut by striking out Bryan De La Rosa to preserve the 2-0 deficit. Southern Illinois would get on the board in the bottom of the inning as Nolan Earley led off with a single and two wild pitches and a fielder's choice would plate him to make the score 2-1.

But the Crushers loaded the bases with no one out and eventually scored three times in the ninth to make the game 5-1. In the bottom half, back-to-back walks by Toby DeMello and Craig Massey set up a sacrifice fly by Earley two batters later, making it 5-2. Southern Illinois would load the bases themselves with two outs, putting the tying runs on base, but Steve Marino lined out to end the game.

Lake Erie used nine pitchers in the contest, five of which pitched a third of an inning or less, helping to shatter the previous longest game this season for the Miners by 25 minutes. Miller pitched his fourth straight quality start, but took the loss as the Miners stranded 13 total baserunners in the contest to drop to 9-9 on the season.

The Miners will look to bounce back over the .500 mark on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. when Dan Ludwig takes the mound against Lake Erie's Colin Feldtman.
