Florence Y'alls News Release
Florence, Ky. - The Florence Freedom, presented by Titan Mechanical Solutions, hit four home runs, while Union-native Zach Isler finished off a complete game performance in an emphatic 10-5 victory over the Traverse City Beach Bums.
The Freedom (6-12) kicked off the series in style by scoring 10 runs on 14 hits, including four home runs, and seven extra-base hits (all season-highs). Andrew Godbold homered twice, while Garrett Vail and Collins Cuthrell both added two-run shots to extend the Freedom's advantage late in the game. Florence scored in six of its eight innings at the plate.
Besides a four-run, five-hit fourth inning, Isler was stellar. He finished off his complete game (eight hits, five runs, seven strikeouts, no walks) by retiring 15 of the final 17 batters he faced.
Florence took a three-run lead for Isler in the second inning. After a Cuthrell double, Godbold launched a towering two-run home run to left field. Three consecutive singles followed and Andre Mercurio added an RBI.
The Beach Bums took the lead by recording five hits and four runs in the fourth inning, but their advantage did not last long. In the bottom half of the inning, Godbold hit a line-drive home run to left for his second of the night, knotting the score at four.
The Freedom took the lead in the fifth as Godbold reached base via a four-pitch walk, stole second, and then took third on a return throw to the pitcher. He scored when Vail grounded a ball to third that was bobbled by Jose Vargas at third base.
Taylor Oldham brought home Daniel Fraga on a single in the sixth when Traverse City's centerfielder let the ball go off his glove and all the way to the wall. With a 6-4 lead, Vail and Cuthrell both hit two-run bombs to send the Freedom in front 10-4. The Beach Bums added one in the ninth on a home run to center by Giancarlo Brugnoni, but Isler retired the next batter to finish off the game.
Godbold finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, two home runs, and four runs scored. Cuthrell (three runs, double) and Vail (three hits, two runs) also hit homers and finished with a pair of RBIs each. Oldham and Travis Weaver also added multi-hit nights.
The Freedom will go for their second-straight victory tomorrow when the two teams meet again. Florence will send Stetson Nelson (0-0, 1.00 ERA) to the hill, while Traverse City will counter with Michael Schreves (0-2, 6.88 ERA) with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
