State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE -- Two second-inning home runs put the State College Spikes behind early, and the Lowell Spinners were able to hold on and top the Spikes in the first game of a three-game set between the two teams, 5-2, on Tuesday night at LeLacheur Park.
State College (25-27) starter Zack Von Rosenberg (1-6) saw his streak of 17 straight innings without allowing an earned run snapped in the when Brandon Jacobs took a 3-1 pitch over the left-field fence to put Lowell (14-37) ahead. Two batters later, David Renfroe hit the first pitch he saw over the same wall to give the Spinners a 2-0 lead.
After another Lowell run in the sixth inning, the Spikes got on the board in the top of the seventh when Andy Vasquez led off with a double and scored on Gerlis Rodriguez's single. The Spinners came back with two more runs, however, before State College closed the scoring with Kelson Brown crossing the plate on a wild pitch.
Vasquez took over as the Spikes' designated hitter for NYPL All-Star Matt Curry in the fourth inning, and joined NYPL All-Star Adalberto Santos in posting a multi-hit game for State College. Mel Rojas, Jr. doubled in the sixth inning to contribute to the Spikes offense.
Von Rosenberg took the loss after allowing two runs on the pair of homers and a total of eight hits over five innings. The right-hander struck out two batters in the effort, and kept his ERA at 2.31 since the beginning of July.
Lowell starter Madison Younginer (3-5) picked up the win with six shutout frames, yielding three hits while striking out one. Younginer made the start one day after he was scheduled to face Auburn in a game canceled due to rain. Michael Hacker (1) got the save with two innings of one-run ball. Hacker also allowed two hits and a walk while striking out four.
Former Spikes catcher Josue Peley went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in. Peley won the 2008 Pittsburgh Pirates Community Commitment Award in his time with State College.
Wednesday night, the Spikes will try to even up their series with the Spinners in a 7:05 p.m. matchup at LeLacheur Park. State College will send left-hander Zack Dodson (2-2) to the mound to follow up on his five innings of no-hit ball against Staten Island in his last start. Lowell will counter with right-hander Tyler Wilson (1-3), who was originally scheduled to take the ball on Tuesday before the rains interfered.
Fans can catch all of the action on the Spikes Radio Network and flagship station 95.3 FM 3WZ starting at 6:50 p.m. with the Spikes GameDay Show live from LeLacheur Park.
