Schutz Homers as IronBirds Beat Muckdogs

Batavia, NY - Kipp Schutz blasted a two-run homer in the top of the first inning Tuesday night as the Aberdeen IronBirds defeated the Batavia Muckdogs 4-2.

The IronBirds jumped on the scoreboard in the first against starter Justin Edwards. With one out, Austin Knight reached on an error on shortstop Yunier Castillo. Schutz (4) blasted a homer to deep right field to give Aberdeen a 2-0 lead.

Aberdeen extended the lead in the second. Rehabber Tyler Stampone led off the inning with a triple. Sammie Starr knocked him in with an RBI-single.

Batavia scored its first run in the third inning. Yunier Castillo led things off with a double. He advanced to third on a ground out before scoring on Chris Edmondson's sacrifice fly to left field.

The Muckdogs continued to chip away at the deficit in the sixth. Jonathan Rodriguez and Patrick Biserta hit back-to-back singles to get things going. Roberto Espinoza knocked in Rodriguez on an RBI-double, pulling Batavia to within one.

Bruno Sanchez exited the game after surrendering the double. In 5.1 innings he surrendered two runs, both earned, on six hits. Sanchez walked three and struck out one.

The IronBirds got the run back in the top of the seventh. With one out, Starr hit a soft ground ball to the left side. Rodriguez charged, bare-handed, and fired wildly to first base. Starr got to second base. He advanced to third on a fly out to center field and scored on a passed ball.

Sanchez (3-3) got the win. Edwards (3-3) took the loss. The left-hander surrendered four runs, two earned, in seven innings of work. Steve Mazur (5) recorded the final six outs to pick up the save.

The IronBirds and the Muckdogs will meet in game two of this three-game set on Wednesday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. The PNC Bank pregame show will begin at 6:55 PM. Check it out at www.ironbirdsbaseball.com.
