4-Run 1st Inning Gives Hudson Valley 4-3 Win Over Vermont Tuesday

BURLINGTON, VT --- The Hudson Valley Renegades scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the first inning and then held on for a 4-3 New York-Penn League victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters on Tuesday night at Dutchess Stadium.

The Renegades scored all four runs off Vermont starter Chad Jenkins (2-5), who retired just one of eight batters that he faced with two hits, four walks and a hit batter. Steve Wunderlich gave Hudson Valley a 1-0 lead with an RBI single before Jenkins walked Mayo Acosta to load the bases and threw a wild pitch to allow a second run.

Jenkins then hit Burt Reynolds to reload the bases, then walked Elias Otero and Kyle Lusson back-to-back to force home two more runs. Shane Zellers came in for Jenkins and got out of the inning without any more runs scoring with a strikeout and flyout.

Vermont relievers did not allow another run over the next seven innings as Cameron Selik allowed three hits and struckout three over four scoreless inning, while Kevin Cahill one hit and one strikeout in three scoreless innings.

The Lake Monsters got on the scoreboard in the sixth as Russell Moldenhauer walked with two outs, moved to third on a David Freitas double and both runners scored on a Ronnie LaBrie two-run double to cut the deficit in half at 4-2. LaBrie led off the ninth with a double and moved to third on a Jason Martinson infield single bringing the go ahead run to the plate for Vermont.

Pinch hitter Wade Moore came up to face reliever Adam Liberator and grounded to first baseman Wunderlich, who tagged first base and threw to second to get Martinson for a double play as LaBrie scored. Wunderlich then got Connor Rowe to flyout to right field to end the game.

James Patterson (2-1) gave up four hits with one walk and four strikeouts over five innings for the win, while Liberatore recorded his second save for Hudson Valley (26-24). LaBrie, Chad Mozingo and Blake Kelso each had two hits as Vermont outhit the Renegades 9-7. It was just the second loss in 21 games this season that the Lake Monsters have had more hits than their opponent.

Vermont (27-23) remains one game ahead of Connecticut (27-25) for first-place in the Stedler Division despite the loss on Tuesday. The Lake Monsters will continue their six-game roadtrip with the second of a three-game series at Hudson Valley on Wednesday night.
