The Florence Freedom (37-25) had just four hits, two of them home runs, as they beat the Gateway Grizzlies (27-34) 3-1 Sunday evening in Florence, KY.

Scott Pickens and Zach Schmidt went "back-to-back" in the fifth inning to put the Freedom up 3-0. Pickens homer followed a one-out walk.

The Grizzlies got thier only run in the seventh when they strung together three one-out singles to chase Freedom starter Joel Posey. Jimmy Reiter capped off the short rally with an RBI single to bring in Freddy Lopez.

Reiter was 2-5 with the RBI. Lopez was 1-3 with the run scored. Shawn Smarsh, Ben Margalski, Phil Warren and Brandon Averill each had hits in the loss.

Grizzlies starter Erik Dessau (3-3) took the loss. Dessau went seven innings allowing all three runs on four hits. He walked two and struck out three. Chris Little pitched a perfect inning in relief.

The Grizzlies and Freedom will play the "rubber match" of the series Monday night in Florence. Grizzlies ace Brandon Smith (7-3) will toe the rubber for Gateway. Game time is 6:05 central time.
