Roosters Continue Winning Close Games

Richmond, Indiana - Richmond beat the River City Rascals 6-4 on Saturday night in the first game of the series. The Roosters won despite being out-hit nine to four in the contest. A couple of clutch hits by Dick Daly, Jr. and some excellent base running allowed the Richmond to continue its hot streak, now 11-5 since the All-Star break.

The Roosters got ahead quickly with two runs in the first. Kevin White hit a two-run single to right field that scored Gerald Miller and Mike Reese, both of which reached base on walks. The Rascals got one run in both the third and fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2. Anthony Slagle had a RBI double in the third while Rafael Ornelas hit a run-scoring single in the fourth. Dick Daly, Jr. broke the tie in the Roosters' half of the fourth with a solo home run to right field that made it 3-2.

River City turned things around in the sixth, scoring two runs to take the lead. Nick Saunders led off the inning with a home run down the line in right field. Jake Manning reached base in the next at-bat on an error and later scored on a single by Tony Calderon to give the Rascals a 4-3 lead. The Roosters got some great base running in the eighth. Mike Reese scored from second on a fielder's choice and Nate Gravley scored on an error by the center fielder. Kevin White also scored on a single by Dick Daly, Jr. to retake the lead for Richmond at 6-4. The Rascals would get a couple of runners on in the ninth but Adam Varteressian (1) came on in relief to get his first save of the year. Kris Regas (2-1) pitched two innings out of the bullpen to nail down the win while Wes Hutchison (1-2) took the loss.

The Roosters (30-31) will continue their series against the Rascals (32-28) on Sunday at 4:35 p.m. (Indiana time) at McBride Stadium. The new Frontier League leader in career wins, Matt Schweitzer (4-5, 3.54 ERA), will get the start for Richmond and oppose Brian Keating (1-5, 3.21) of River City.
